The Ethical University

Universities and colleges across the United States have become hotbeds of administrative, academic, financial, and sexual scandals. Each new case erodes the societal recognition of the value of higher education systems. It is clear that in order for these institutions to reclaim their respected status requires an examination and rebuilding of the ethical foundations of higher education. This book gathers faculty and administrators from highly respected schools to examine the current situation and mark directions for change. Chapters address such topics as privacy, shared governance, grievance procedures, accountability, adjunct instructors, student athletes, campus policing, pedagogy and rub...

This book provides new perspectives on endurance sport and how it contributes to a good and sustainable life in times of climate change, ecological disruption and inconvenient truths. It builds on a continental philosophical tradition, i.e. the philosophy of among others Peter Sloterdijk, but also on “ecosophy” and American pragmatism to explore the idea of sport as a voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles. Since ancient times, human beings have been involved in practices of the Self in order to work on themselves and improve themselves, for instance by strengthening their physical condition and performance through sport. In the contemporary world, millions of individuals en...

In this work, the authors develop an anthropo-philosophical analysis of Olympic athletics from different perspectives. It will reveal the process of cultural evolution concerning the human being, where the sport should not contribute to forget but to reaffirm the being. Consequently, the meaning of athletics events performed in a stadium will be analysed to understand that it is always the human being which makes them meaningful, and that sport is a very particular type of "dasein" which expresses the relationship of the human being with the world around.

The book includes a critical analysis of the historical development of philosophic ideas about sport, three essays on the research methods typically used by sport philosophers, twelve essays that address vital issues at the forefront of key research areas, as well as four essays on topics of future disciplinary concern. The book also includes a glossary of key terms and concepts, an essay on resources available to researchers and practitioners, an essay on careers opportunities in the discipline, and an extensive annotated bibliography of key literature.

In ancient Rome, Greek agónes were never widespread. This is evidenced by the fact that the word agón never actually found a counterpart in the Latin language. Instead, the Romans used the term certamen, which does not have the same exact meaning as the Greek word it replaces. In Rome, certamina were mostly considered performances in which the athlete was nothing more than a performer-actor (or actress, because some authors talk about women who appeared in struggles and competitions fighting other women) and not an athlete in the strictest sense. Participants in certamen were often criminals and thugs (or prostitutes). They competed in the stadium during the day and were hired to carry out...
