The Church of Almighty God, also known as Eastern Lightning, teaches that Jesus Christ has returned to earth as a Chinese woman to judge humankind. The Chinese government has banned it and similar groups, and targeted them in its campaign against “cults” such as Falun Gong. Based on the Church’s own texts and exogenous reports, Emily Dunn offers the first comprehensive account of what the Church of Almighty God teaches, how Chinese Christians and the government have responded to new religious movements related to Protestantism, and how it all fits with global Christianity and the history of Chinese religion.

Freedom of religious belief is guaranteed under the constitution of the People's Republic of China, but the degree to which this freedom is able to be exercised remains a highly controversial issue. This study investigates the history of one such official church, Moore Memorial Church in Shanghai. This church was founded by American Methodist missionaries. By the time of the 1949 revolution, it was the largest Protestant church in East Asia, running seven day a week program...
This book follows the genealogy of the Tasker and Blackburn families who originated in the area around Goole in Yorkshire. There were branches of the Tasker family in Rawcliffe, Airmyn, Hook, Cowick and Snaith. The Blackburn family farmed at Spaldington and Holme on Spalding Moor, near Howden in the East Riding, before moving to Goole Fields. Later, members of both families lived in Goole itself. The title of the book reflects these movements. But Taskers and Blackburns married into other families, and many of them moved away. There were sizeable branches in Hull, Todmorden and other parts of Yorkshire, and one large branch as far away as Seaham Harbour in County Durham. The book includes these side branches too. The family tree on the front cover provides an overview of the content. This book is available at a discount through the print-on-demand publisher www.lulu.com
