This book explores the politics of ethnicity and nationalism in the Caribbean from a critical discourse-analytical perspective. Focusing on political communication in Trinidad and Tobago, it offers unique socio-political insights into one of the most complex and diverse countries of the Archipelago. Through a detailed reconstruction of Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s 2010 victorious run for office, this book offers ample empirical evidence of the multimodal discursive strategies that held the key to the success of the first woman PM candidate and her inter-ethnic coalition bid to overcome political tribalism in the country. In parallel, it explores the implications and challenges of the postcolonial Trinbagonian national project, caught between pluralism and creolization. Through its innovative, context-dependent and interdisciplinary CDS approach, this book breaks new ground in Caribbean Studies while at the same time broadening the horizons of the Euro-American tradition of Political Discourse Studies to address the complexities of global postcoloniality.
Pragmatics of Fiction provides systematic orientation in the emerging field of studying pragmatics with/in fictional data. It provides an authoritative and accessible overview of this versatile new field in its methodological and theoretical richness. Giving center stage to fictional language allows scholars to review key concepts in sociolinguistics such as genre, style, voice, stance, dialogue, participation structure or features of orality and literariness. The contributors explore language as one of the creative tools to craft story worlds and characters by drawing on concepts such as regional, social and ethnic language variation, as well as multilingualism. Pour bien communiquer, la connaissance de la grammaire d’une langue est une condition nécessaire mais pas suffisante. « Il ne suffit pas de parler, il faut parler juste » disait déjà Shakespeare. En effet, dans toute culture, la prise de parole se fait en référence à des canons implicites, soit pour s’y soumettre, soit pour les transgresser. Pendant quatre ans, une équipe d’ethnolinguistes de divers horizons a choisi d’étudier les canons supra-grammaticaux qui servent, pour une société donnée, à définir le ton juste suivant les situations d’énonciation. Les dits canons peuvent influer sur l’énonciation jusque dans ses rapports avec les exigences de la grammaire. Tous les auteurs ont abordé le canon comme une construction culturelle et dynamique, en constante évolution, reflétant des rapports de domination à un moment donné et impliquant une évaluation du discours comme étant plus ou moins proche de l’idéal. La question se pose toutefois de l’évaluation de la canonicité par les membres d’un groupe. En effet, elle peut être asymétrique, selon les compétences des participants, et peut rester uniquement implicite.
