In this inspiring manifesto, an internationally renowned oceanographer makes the provocative case for why protecting nature makes economic sense. In this highly readable narrative, Sala, director of National Geographic's Pristine Seas project, tells the story of his scientific awakening, the colorful mentors whose work inspired him, and his transition from academic to activism--because, as he put it, he was tired of writing the obituary of the ocean. "David Bestué narrates what 'passing time' means in the works of Enric Miralles. Walking through, living, touching buildings to get to know them, coaxing meaning and emotions from them, capturing them in a series of photographs that illustrate a living architecture, removed from the preciosity so typical of the sphere of architecture. ... Bestué tries to unravel the architect's creative process, to understand how his ideas were materialised and how his work can survive in an adverse world".--P. 4 of cover.
"The aim of publishing this book is to recover the name of the architect Enric Sagnier I Villavecchia (Barcelona, 1858-1931) for the history of Catalan architecture in general, and that of Barcelona in particular. He was the architect who designed some of the city's most important and recognisable public buildings, amongst them the Customs House, the Law Courts and the Church on the summit of Tibidabo."--BOOK JACKET.
When Enric Miralles passed away at age 45, in 2000, he left behind these 11 buildings in various stages of design and construction scattered all over Europe--in Barcelona, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Venice, among other cities. All were under the auspices of the Enric Miralles-Benedetta Tagliabue studio, or EMBT, and this catalogue is organized and introduced by his wife and partner, Benedetta Tagliabue. She has assembled a range of valuable and almost exclusively unpublished material on the projects, extending from their gestation, documented in Miralles's own unmistakable drawings and writings, to photographic records of their current progress, with some already completed and the rest well on their way. In between, readers will find photo collages, topographical maps, color swatches and project models, along with a previously unpublished text illustrated and signed by Miralles and a 30-minute DVD of a documentary directed by his friend Bigas Luna, depicting progress on the buildings in the years immediately following the architect's death. EMBT: Work in Progress, records the resonant legacy of a great architect.
Collage and Architecture is the first book to cover collage as a tool for design in architecture, making it a valuable resource for students and practitioners. Author Jennifer Shields uses the artworks and built projects of leading artists and architects, such as Le Corbusier, Daniel Libeskind, and Teddy Cruz to illustrate the diversity of collage techniques. The six case study projects from Mexico, Argentina, Sweden, Norway, the United States, and Spain give you a global perspective of architecture as collage. Collage is an important instrument for analysis and design, and Shields’s presentation of this versatile medium draws on decades of relevance in art and architecture, to be adapted and transformed in your own work.
