From the EDITORIAL NOTE. Enrique Gomez Carrillo, the author of these war notes and sketches, is one of the best-known of the younger Spanish writers and journalists of to-day. He is a native of Guatemala, where he was born in 1873, but much of his work has been done in Paris, whose literary and theatrical life before the war he described in several volumes of sketches, "El Modernismo," "Almas y Cerebros," "Como se pasa la vida," etc. He has also travelled in, and written about Russia and Greece, has published a study of Buenos Aires, and is the author of several well-known novels, and collections of short stories - "Flores de Penitencia," "Maravillas," etc. During the war M.
