International Summit on Environmental Assessment, Quebec City, June 12-14, 1994
The objectives of the International Summit on Environmental Assessment were to: review progress on the effectiveness study; exchange information and views on current issues and emerging trends in EA; and, consider practical approaches for strengthening EA practice, including improved cooperation among the participating countries and international organizations. This report presents a summary of the discussions and recommendations of the Summit.

This directory provides a listing of the various legal and policy instruments and guidelines in Canada, which together provide an indication of the current state of Canadian EA practice. It identifies the EA legislation and regulations in various jurisdictions; the EA policy statements and directives of government departments and organizations; and the EA guidelines developed by various sectors. The references provided herein are cross-referenced between sections, as appropriate. As well, documents that are available in both English and French are indicated within the same citation. When available in both languages, the translation is provided as second title. Appendix 1 provides contacts where the listed EA documents can be requested. The list provides key federal, provincial, territorial and municipal departments, as well as Crown Corporations, Institutions, Associations and private sector firms.

Planning and construction of the James Bay Hydroelectric project began in the early 1970s, when the effect of such projects on the physical and social environment was seldom considered. As the project matured, however, its unique and diverse environmental impacts came under intense scrutiny on both sides of the border. Funding of Environmental Impact Assessment Research in Canada
Study to identify current and potential funding sources for environmentalimpact assessment and social impact assessment research in Canada. The studywas limited to potential funding sources for non project-specific EIA and SIAresearch. A telephone survey was conducted of 72 Canadian organizationscomprising federal and provincial government agencies, industries, publicinterest groups, and academic institutions. A detailed methodology is included, as well as the telephone questionnaire.
