Mechanisms of Memory

This fully revised second edition provides the only unified synthesis of available information concerning the mechanisms of higher-order memory formation. It spans the range from learning theory, to human and animal behavioral learning models, to cellular physiology and biochemistry. It is unique in its incorporation of chapters on memory disorders, tying in these clinically important syndromes with the basic science of synaptic plasticity and memory mechanisms. It also covers cutting-edge approaches such as the use of genetically engineered animals in studies of memory and memory diseases. Written in an engaging and easily readable style and extensively illustrated with many new, full-color...

The study of the brain continues to expand at a rapid pace providing fascinating insights into the basic mechanisms underlying nervous system illnesses. New tools, ranging from genome sequencing to non-invasive imaging, and research fueled by public and private investment in biomedical research has been transformative in our understanding of nervous system diseases and has led to an explosion of published primary research articles. Diseases of the Nervous System, Second Edition, summarizes the current state of basic and clinical knowledge for the most common neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. In a systematic progression, each chapter covers either a single disease or a group of re...

Concise Learning and Memory

The study of learning and memory is a central topic in neuroscience and psychology. Many of the basic research findings are directly applicable in the treatment of diseases and aging phenomena, and have found their way into educational theory and praxis. Concise Learning and Memory represents the best 30 chapters from Learning and Memory: A comprehensive reference (Academic Press March 2008), the most comprehensive source of information about learning and memory ever assembled, selected by one of the most respective scientists in the field, John H. Byrne. This concise version provides a truly authoritative collection of overview articles representing fundamental reviews of our knowledge of t...

Hodges' Frontotemporal Dementia

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a cruel disease, robbing patients of core human characteristics and wreaking havoc with relationships. Clinical and scientific interest in FTD and related disorders continues to grow rapidly, with major advances having occurred since this book's last publication. New clinical diagnostic criteria were published in 2011; new pathological discoveries have led to new diagnostic criteria; and major genetic discoveries have been made. This new edition covers these developments, providing the leading resource on FTD, PPA, PSP, CBD, FTD-ALS, and related disorders, now written by a more internationally representative group of authors than before. Providing an in-depth and expert synthesis of the status of our knowledge of FTD and related syndromes, the content includes chapters reviewing clinical, neuropsychiatric, neuropsychological, imaging, and other features of FTD and multidisciplinary approaches to patient management. Essential reading for specialist and generalist neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians, neuropsychologists, neuropathologists, and basic scientists in relevant fields.

Navigation impairments are common among Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and have a devastating impact on daily functioning. To understand the neural and cognitive bases for these impairments, I studied spatial disability in human patients and a transgenic mouse model of AD. Mice were tested with a specialized maze that distinguished allocentric (world-based) hippocampus-dependent strategies from egocentric (self-based) striatum-dependent strategies. I also measured AD-related pathology in the hippocampus and striatum of these mice. Whereas almost all nontransgenic mice used allocentric strategies, more than half of transgenic mice engaged egocentric strategies. In transgenic mice, the hipp...
