Detection Efficiency and Bandwidth Optimized Electro-Optic Sampling of Mid-Infrared Waves
This thesis investigates the detection efficiency of field-resolved measurements of ultrashort mid-infrared waves via electro-optic sampling for the first time. Employing high-power gate pulses and phase-matched upconversion in thick nonlinear crystals, unprecedented efficiencies are achieved for octave-spanning fields in this wavelength range. In combination with state-of-the art, high-power, ultrashort mid-infrared sources, this allows to demonstrate a new regime of linear detection dynamic range for field strengths from mV/cm to MV/cm-levels. Power Scaling of Enhancement Cavities for Nonlinear Optics
Enhancement cavities are passive optical resonators in which continuous-wave laser radiation or pulses of a frequency comb are coherently overlapped, allowing for a power and intensity scaling of up to several orders of magnitude. A prominent application is the table-top generation of bright, laser-like radiation in spectral regions where direct laser action is inefficient or not available at all, via intracavity nonlinear optical processes. However, to exploit the full capacity of this technique further progress is needed. This thesis covers central problems of enhancement cavities, such as finding limitations in scaling the circulating power, measuring cavity parameters with high accuracy, tailoring transverse modes and coupling out radiation generated in the cavity. Unprecedented intracavity laser powers were demonstrated, surpassing previous results by an order of magnitude. As an application, harmonics of the fundamental 1040-nm radiation up to the 21st order are generated. Besides reporting these fine experimental results, the thesis provides an excellent introduction into the physics of enhancement cavities, supported by more than 140 references.
The Tangled Web
In Germany in the early 1930s the Nazis began rounding up Jews and other undesirables for deportation to concentration camps. The most expensive diamonds were confiscated from these prisoners and shipped to a large collection center south of Berlin. Thirty-six Jewish concentration camp jewelers are assigned the task of appraising these gemstones, that would be used as collateral for Hitlers prosecution of the war. A Yank, a Brit and a band of German patriots devise an audacious scheme to retake the greatest concentration of diamonds in the world. The plans success is threatened, however, when the groups leader suspects a traitor in their midst, turning the mission into a tangled web of intrigue and betrayal.

Towards a Compact Thin-Disk-Based Femtosecond XUV Source
This thesis provides unique information on the Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM) technique applied to a thin-disk laser. It describes in detail cavity geometry, the qualitative approach to KLM, and self-starting behavior in the regime of both negative and positive dispersion. Comprehensive comparative analysis of KLM and semiconductor saturable absorber techniques is also carried out. Recent successful experiments on carrier-envelope phase stabilization, spectral broadening and compression of output of this oscillator underline the importance of this new, emerging technology.

Unlike much of Berlioz' music, this meditation on the childhood of Christ is restrained, lyrical, and delicate. The three-part work is scored for seven solo voices, chorus, and orchestra, combining dramatic action and theatricality with philosophical reflection and moments of serene contemplation.
