Erroll Garner, the Most Happy Piano
This book is divided into three sections. The first section, "His Story," is an oral history project. "His Times" is a chronology of Erroll Garner's ancestral background dating back to the early 1800s and his personal and professional life from birth to his death in 1977. "His Recorded Music" is a detailed discography featuring the 78, 45, and 33 1/3 rpm discs issued (and unissued) over Erroll Garner's recorded history from 1937 to 1975.

Né en 1921, il avait tout bonnement réinventé le piano, sans en avoir d'ailleurs appris les règles. Autodidacte de génie, il s'était créé un style absolument personnel, d'une simplicité théorique biblique mais d'une efficacité pyramidale : une main gauche qui plaque sur chaque temps un accord bien plein, une main droite qui développe, avec un iota de retard, dès phrases chantantes et claires comme le jour. Son " swing " massif, son humour, ses riches harmonies, avaient conquis le grand public. Il était ainsi resté, jusqu'à sa mort en 1977, un grand artiste populaire. Au fait il test toujours à travers ses disques aussi frais qu'au premier jour.

Misty
Arranger Frank Mantooth does it again. He takes a great ballad like Misty and twists and blends it into a terrific swing arrangement. Wait until you hear how well this tune works as a medium tempo swing. Solos (written or ad-lib) for alto, trumpet, and trombone are offered with backgrounds and optional repeats. The shout chorus brings it home. Full instrumentation plus a vibraphone part is included along with the usual optional flute, horn, and baritone horn parts. Outstanding writing on a great tune.
