'A thoughtful exploration of humanity ... Fabes is great company and makes riding bicycles seem like the best way to see and understand the world' - Guardian They say that being a good doctor boils down to just four things: Shut up, listen, know something, care. The same could be said for life on the road, too. When Stephen Fabes left his job as a junior doctor and set out to cycle around the world, frontline medicine quickly faded from his mind. Of more pressing concern were the daily challenges of life as an unfit rider on an overloaded bike, helplessly in thrall to pastries. But leaving medicine behind is not as easy as it seems. As he roves continents, he finds people whose health has su...

The Harbingers of Spring is fiction and is a tale of hope set in the surroundings of the author's grandfather's farm in Brown County, Indiana, of memories from the first decades of his life, born of childhood loneliness, amid things he would do if he had the choice to get people to come and visit. This book follows decades of the development of a festival in the Sweetwater Creek valley. It is a presentation of equality and diversity that follows a girl and boy in their pursuit of forbidden love. It presents a global input into a microcosm while the harbingers of spring, from the constellations to the flowers to the wildlife, to annual happenings, mark the growth and education of the two main...

The second edition of this well-received title from the Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation covers the entire Mediterranean mainland coast of Spain from Gibraltar to the French border. This is the only detailed pilot for the Spanish Mediterranean coast running up from Gibraltar to the border with France. It covers a varied cruising area that includes the mountain-backed Costas del and Sol and Blanca, the expansive lagoon of the Mar Menor, the low-lying Ebro delta and the rugged Costa Brava. In between are several great cities including Malaga, Valencia, Tarragona and Barcelona, the Catalan capital. The volume opens with Gibraltar and La Línea. With Imray charts for the same coast, Mediterranean Spain provides all the data necessary for anyone based in Spain, transitting to and from areas further East or the Balearics, or just exploring this rich and varied coast and its hinterland. The coverage has been revised with the text updated, new plans added and other plan updates based on the latest information. This edition has been enhanced by the addition of over 100 aerial photographs showing coastline and harbour approaches.
This volume examines the changing role of Marian devotion in politics, public life, and popular culture in Western Europe and America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book brings together, for the first time, studies on Marian devotions across the Atlantic, tracing their role as a rallying point to fight secularization, adversarial ideologies, and rival religions. This transnational approach illuminates the deep transformations of devotional cultures across the world. Catholics adopted modern means and new types of religious expression to foster mass devotions that epitomized the catholic essence of the “nation.” In many ways, the development of Marian devotions across the world is also a response to the questioning of Pope Sovereignty. These devotional transformations followed an Ultramontane pattern inspired not only by Rome but also by other successful models approved by the Vatican such as Lourdes. Collectively, they shed new light on the process of globalization and centralization of Catholicism.
