Georg Busolt
This book is a study of Georg Busolt (1850-1920), a noted German historian of classical Greece. The treatment is based on a collection of his own letters, mainly written to other scholars. Over 100 letters from Busolt to others are collected and edited here. Each letter, in the original German, is presented with commentary and the whole is woven into a chronological narrative and survey of Busolt's career. There are four chapters (The Busolt Family; Königsberg; Kiel, Göttingen), the last three corresponding to the universities where he studied and taught. Despite Busolt's eminence and the continued usefulness of his two great handbooks (Griechische Geschichte; Griechische Staatskunde), nothing has ever been written about him. Moreover, the narrative gives a picture of Prussian universities and academic issues during his period - a crucial one for the development of German education - and is thus a contribution to the history of scholarship.

Transformations of Romanness
Roman identity is one of the most interesting cases of social identity because in the course of time, it could mean so many different things: for instance, Greek-speaking subjects of the Byzantine empire, inhabitants of the city of Rome, autonomous civic or regional groups, Latin speakers under ‘barbarian’ rule in the West or, increasingly, representatives of the Church of Rome. Eventually, the Christian dimension of Roman identity gained ground. The shifting concepts of Romanness represent a methodological challenge for studies of ethnicity because, depending on its uses, Roman identity may be regarded as ‘ethnic’ in a broad sense, but under most criteria, it is not. Romanness is indeed a test case how an established and prestigious social identity can acquire many different shades of meaning, which we would class as civic, political, imperial, ethnic, cultural, legal, religious, regional or as status groups. This book offers comprehensive overviews of the meaning of Romanness in most (former) Roman provinces, complemented by a number of comparative and thematic studies. A similarly wide-ranging overview has not been available so far.

Antiquarian Literature in the Sixteenth Century
During the sixteenth century, antiquarian studies (the study of the material past, comprising modern archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics) rose in Europe in parallel to the technical development of the printing press. Some humanists continued to prefer the manuscript form to disseminate their findings – as numerous fair copies of sylloges and treatises attest –, but slowly the printed medium grew in popularity, with its obvious advantages but also its many challenges. As antiquarian printed works appeared, the relationship between manuscript and printed sources also became less linear: printed copies of earlier works were annotated to serve as a means of research, and printed works could be copied by hand – partially or even completely. This book explores how antiquarian literature (collections of inscriptions, treatises, letters...) developed throughout the sixteenth century, both in manuscript and in print; how both media interacted with each other, and how these printed antiquarian works were received, as attested by the manuscript annotations left by their early modern owners and readers.

Das vierbändige Lexikon beinhaltet rund 6.400 Biografien österreichischer Frauen bzw. Hinweise auf frauenbiografische Spuren von der RömerInnenzeit bis zur Gegenwart - einschließlich Geburtsjahr 1938 - und ist auf einen Wirkungsbereich in den geografischen Grenzen des heutigen Österreich bezogen. Es zeigt eindrucksvoll das Wirken von Frauen in Politik, Gesellschaft, Kultur und Geschichte, betritt dadurch in vielen Bereichen biografisches Neuland und eröffnet neue Forschungsperspektiven. Die Konzeption des Lexikons orientiert sich an den theoretischen Überlegungen einer feministischen Biografieforschung, welche es erlaubt, weibliche Lebensläufe in deren genderspezifischer Bedeutung zu reflektieren und zu würdigen. Das Lexikon ist Teil des multimodularen Dokumentations-, Forschungs- und Vernetzungsprojekts "biografiA. Biografische Datenbank und Lexikon österreichischer Frauen" am Wiener Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst.
