His earlier volume, The Biblical Qumran Scrolls, presented the evidence — the transcriptions and textual variants of all the biblical scrolls — and this volume explores the implications and significance of that evidence. The Bible has not changed, but modern knowledge of it certainly has changed. The ancient Scrolls have opened a window and shed light on a period in the history of the text’s formation that had languished in darkness for two thousand years. They offer a parade of surprises that greatly enhance knowledge of how the scriptural texts developed through history.
The Community of the Renewed Covenant grew out of a symposium, held at the University of Notre Dame in 1993, which convened to address the state of the question in scrolls research. The contributors to this volume, each a well-known Qumran scholar and member of the international team currently editing the unpublished scrolls, represent the cutting edge in Dead Sea Scrolls scholarship.
The monograph produces a new interpretation of the opening chapter of 1 Samuel by combining several hermeneutical models, including the theory of chaotic (dynamically unstable) systems and the most recent, essentially post-modern, form criticism, to produce a new interpretation of the opening chapters of 1 Samuel. It argues that 1 Samuel 1-8 is an integral literary unit whose stance on such pivotal issues as monarchy and cultic centralization poorly agrees with that of the balance of Deuteronomy - Kings. In the diachronic perspective, this unit can be construed as a post-Deuteronomistic redactional interpolation polemically directed against several planks of the Deuteronomic/Deuteronomistic agenda. In the synchronic perspective, the pattern of relationship between 1 Samuel 1-8 and the balance of Genesis - Kings calls for a non-linear, multi-dimensional reading of the corpus. Both interpretational trajectories lead to the conclusion that the thrust of the Former Prophets in its final form is controlled to a considerable extent by non-Deuteronomistic elements.
In 4QSamuela and the Text of Samuel, Jason Driesbach offers a thorough analysis of secondary readings in 4QSamuela (4Q51) along with those in other major witnesses to Samuel (MT, GB, GL), leading to a nuanced characterization of the scribal features and textual affiliation of 4QSamuela, with implications for understanding its place in text-critical studies and literary analyses of the books of Samuel. 4QSamuela has been regarded by some scholars as an untrustworthy witness to the text of Samuel and by other scholars as a crucial witness, sometimes containing lost readings. Further, some regard this scroll as a non-biblical work based on Samuel. Driesbach’s analysis offers an evaluation of these views based on a sound and thorough consideration of the scroll.

In this book Sigurd Grindheim argues that Jesus implicitly claimed to be God's equal and that his claim to be God's son must be understood in this light. The argument unfolds through analysis of the gospel accounts regarding Jesus' claims to inaugurate the Kingdom of God, his understanding of his miracles, his forgiveness of sins, his expectation to be the ultimate judge of all the world, his claim to speak with an authority that matches that of the Mosaic law, the absolute demands he made to his disciples, and his appropriation for himself of metaphors that in the Scriptures of Israel were exclusively used of YHWH. Furthermore Grindheim traces these claimes back to the Historical Jesus. Through a comprehensive examination of the primary sources, Grindheim argues that Jesus' claims go beyond the claims made on behalf of human and even angelic beings within Second Temple Judaism. Jesus presents himself in a role that in a Jewish context was reserved for YHWH.

Teaching and researching the Gospel of John for thirty years has led author Mary L. Coloe to an awareness of the importance of the wisdom literature to make sense of Johannine theology, language, and symbolism: in the prologue, with Nicodemus, in the Bread of Life discourse, with Mary and Lazarus, and in the culminating “Hour.” She also shows how the late Second Temple theology expressed in the books of Sirach and Wisdom, considered deuterocanonical and omitted from some Bible editions, are essential intertexts. Only the book of Wisdom speaks of “the reign of God” (Wis 10:10), “eternity life” (Wis 5:15), and the ambrosia maintaining angelic life (Wis 19:21)—all concepts found in John’s Gospel. While the Gospel explicitly states the Logos was enfleshed in Jesus, this is also true of Sophia. Coloe makes the case that Jesus’s words and deeds embody Sophia throughout the narrative. At the beginning of each chapter Coloe provides text from the later wisdom books that resonate with the Gospel passage, drawing Sophia out of the shadows.
