Analysis of the Abhisamayālaṃkāra

After first publishing a summary of it, here he undertook a full explanation of it according to the commentarial tradition. Unfortunately, he died before it could be finished, and the present book covers about three fifths of the whole. Despite the growth of Tibetan Buddhist studies in the west since his time, this work remains unparalleled. It is indespensible for the serious student."--BOOK JACKET.

This remarkable work has been called the most important of the texts treasured by the Madhyamika and the very foundation of Mahayana metaphysics. These texts teach a non-systematic religious philosophy, fervent in devotion and rich in poetic expression, centering on the notion that all is emptiness. The author analyses the doctrine of Prajnaparamita or "Transcendental Wisdom." It is based on Tibetan exegetical literature and is considered by learned Tibetan tradition to be the most important in the following ways: -- As a summary of the Prajnaparamita sutras; and -- As the text containing the special theory of the marga or the Path to the Attainment of Nirvana according to the Mahayanistic viewpoint. The author, E Obermiller (1901-1935), was an eminent Buddhist scholar who studied at length those Indian and Tibetan commentaries which are highly esteemed by learned Tibetan tradition and are considered to contain the clearest and most thorough and complete analysis of the subjects contained in the Abhisamayalamkara.

History As Propaganda

Despite Chinese efforts to stop foreign countries from granting him visas, the Dalai Lama has become one of the most recognizable and best loved people on the planet, drawing enormous crowds wherever he goes. By contrast, China's charismatically-challenged leaders attract crowds of protestors waving Tibetan flags and shouting "Free Tibet!" whenever they visit foreign countries. By now most Westerners probably think they understand the political situation in Tibet. But, John Powers argues, most Western scholars of Tibet evince a bias in favor of one side or the other in this continuing struggle. Some of the most emotionally charged rhetoric, says Powers, is found in studies of Tibetan history. narratives.

Buddhism Between Tibet and China

As Tibet enters into its 50th year of Chinese rule, questions of cultural distinctions and similarities are formed to determine the future of the relationship between the Snow Lion and the Red Dragon. But often left unsaid is the long history the two share, and the cultural interchanges that have existed over time. Setting political agenda aside, Matthew Kapstein has assembled a collection of essays to probe the nature of this relationship, from the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 CE) to the present. The historical accounts that comprise this volume display the dialogue between Tibet and China surrounding scholarship, the fine arts, politics, philosophy, and religion, providing insight into the history behind the relationship from a variety of geographical regions.
