The Green Belt of Europe
The Iron Curtain, running from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, divided Europe for almost 40 years and no activity was allowed in this "forbidden" zone. When it fell in 1989, it left a strip of land that runs the entire length of Europe and that has remained comparatively undisturbed - a green belt. The Green Belt initiative aims to integrate this entire strip of land with its key habitats and ecological areas as part of an international network of valuable ecosystems. This book provides background information on the initiative, reviews current activities in a number of case studies and looks at how the initiative can fit into current and future global efforts to protect European biodiversity.
World Directory of Environmental Organizations
This is a guide to organizations worldwide concerned with conservation and natural resources. The directory features descriptions of over 2600 organizations in over 200 countries, profiles of over 170 intergovernmental agencies and UN programmes, descriptions of over 400 international NGOs, over 2000 national government and non-governmental organizations, full addresses and contact numbers, and a bibliography of data sources.

General Guidelines for the Development of the Pan-European Ecological Network
The Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy, which was endorsed by ministers from 54 countries in the UN-ECE region on 25 October 1995, provides for the establishment by 2005 of the Pan-European Ecological Network. These Guidelines provide a reference document for all those involved in establishing and managing the network. The document aims to provide a coherent framework for guiding an array of co-operative, decentralised measures which aim to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the ecosystems, habitats, species and landscapes of European importance.
