Excerpt from Evangelistic Work: In Principle and Practice It is "the altar that sanctifieth the gift." To this divine pledge this book owes its origin and its inspiration. The object ennobles the oblation. The cause of a world's evangelization is like the wheel in Ezekiel's vision. Its rim is dreadful, for it touches both earth and heaven; and every other question that is vital to holy living is embraced in it, - "a wheel in the middle of a wheel." To reach all human souls with the good tidings is so imperative in importance that it fills the word of God and covers the whole history and philosophy of church-life. It would be presumptuous to hope that the pen which writes these pages can solv...

Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter xxiv. A word of witness. erily I say unto you: If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."1 This is one of the great, deep lessons taught by our Lord. The difference between the minute mustard-seed and the mountain is not, however, one of quantity only, but of quality also. The seed may be little, but it is the hiding of that great for...

"To the Work! To the Work!" is a Christian book authored by Dwight Lyman Moody, a prominent evangelist and preacher of the 19th century. Originally published in 1884, the book serves as a call to action for Christians to engage in evangelism and missionary work. In "To the Work! To the Work!", Moody emphasizes the importance of spreading the gospel and fulfilling the Great Commission, which is the directive given by Jesus Christ to his disciples to preach the gospel to all nations. He passionately argues that every Christian has a responsibility to share the message of salvation with others and to actively participate in efforts to bring people to faith in Christ. The book is structured as a...

Most people think of evangelism as something an individual does--one person talking to one or more other people about the gospel. Bryan Stone, however, argues that evangelism is the duty and call of the entire church as a body of witness. Evangelism after Christendom explores what it means to understand and put to work evangelism as a rich practice of the church, grounding evangelism in the stories of Israel, Jesus, and the Apostles. This thorough treatment is marked by an astute sensitivity to the ways in which Christian evangelism has in the past been practiced violently, intentionally or unintentionally. Pointing to exemplars both Protestant and Catholic, Stone shows pastors, professors, and students how evangelism can work nonviolently.

Dwight L. Moody, in full Dwight Lyman Moody, (born February 5, 1837, East Northfield, Massachusetts, U.S.--died December 22, 1899, Northfield, Massachusetts), prominent American evangelist who set the pattern for later evangelism in large cities. Moody left his mother's farm at age 17 to work in Boston and there was converted from Unitarianism to evangelicalism. In 1856 he moved to Chicago and prospered as a shoe salesman but in 1860 gave up business for missionary work. He worked with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA; 1861-73), was president of the Chicago YMCA, founded the Moody Church, and engaged in slum mission work. In 1870 he met Ira D. Sankey, a hymn writer, and with him b...
