Current Progress in the Understanding of Secondary Brain Damage from Trauma and Ischemia

Information is provided from the basic and clinical sciences on the mechanisms damaging the brain from trauma or ischemia. New aspects involve the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrial failure, pathobiology of axonal injury, molecular signals activating glial elements, or the emerging therapeutical role of neurotrophins. Experimental issues involve a better analysis of the ischemic penumbra, the salvagable tissue. Therapeutic contributions reach from the environmental influence to gene expression, including neuroprotection, such as hibernation – mother nature’s experiment – or hypothermia which is reported to induce cell swelling. Treatment issues deal also with thrombolysis and combina...

In Search of Lost Futures

In Search of Lost Futures asks how imaginations might be activated through practices of autoethnography, multimodality, and deep interdisciplinarity—each of which has the power to break down methodological silos, cultivate novel research sensibilities, and inspire researchers to question what is known about ethnographic process, representation, reflexivity, audience, and intervention within and beyond the academy. By blurring the boundaries between the past, present, and future; between absence and presence; between the possible and the impossible; and between fantasy and reality, In Search of Lost Futures pushes the boundaries of ethnographic engagement. It reveals how researchers on the cutting edge of the discipline are studying absence and grief and employing street performance, museum exhibit, anticipation, or simulated reality to research and intervene in the possible, the impossible, and the uncertain.

Indecomposable Representations of Graphs and Algebras

Indecomposable Representations of Graphs and Algebras

I.N. Bernstein, I.M. Gelfand and V.A. Ponomarev have recently shown that the bijection, first observed by P. Gabriel, between the indecomposable representations of graphs ("quivers") with a positive definite quadratic form and the positive roots of this form can be proved directly. Appropriate functors produce all indecomposable representations from the simple ones in the same way as the canonical generators of the Weyl group produce all positive roots from the simple ones. This method is extended in two directions. In order to deal with all Dynkin diagrams rather than with those having single edges only, we consider valued graphs ("species"). In addition, we consider valued graphs with positive semi-definite quadratic form, i.e. extended Dynkin diagrams. The main result of the paper describes all indecomposable representations up to the homogeneous ones, of a valued graph with positive semi-definite quadratic form. These indecomposable representations are of two types: those of discrete dimension type, and those of continuous dimension type.
