Advances in Geophysics, Tectonics and Petroleum Geosciences

This edited book is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 2nd Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-2), Tunisia, in 2019. It is of interest to all researchers practicing geophysics/seismology, structural, and petroleum geology. With four sections spanning a large spectrum of geological and geophysical topics with particular reference to Middle East, Mediterranean region, and Africa, this book presents a series of research methods that are nowadays in use for measuring, quantifying, and analyzing several geological domains. It starts with a subsection dedicated to the latest research studies on seismic hazard and risk assessment in Africa pres...

Signal Processing for Ge...

Increasingly sophisticated techniques are available for obtaining seismic sections that give an accurate description of subsurface heterogeneities. These techniques continue to benefit from the progress made in research by signal processing specialists. The aim of this book is to familiarize geologists and geophysicists with the basic concepts of signal processing used in seismic surveys. It shows the value of using a combination of tools to solve a given problem. Many of the examples in this book come from the latest research. Its goal is to improve understanding of the most common signal processing algorithms and to suggest a methodology for testing them. Sometimes, modeling with simple, well-known functions is a very useful way to understand the behavior of a transformation. In this way, we seek to provide the specialist with a critical approach for handling these algorithms. This book will encourage the exchange of information among geologists, geophysicists and signal processing researchers, and will provide them with invaluable technical know-how.

This book focuses on the links between deep earth (mantle) and shallow processes in areas of active tectonics in the Arabian Plate and Surrounding Areas. It also provides key information for energy resources in these areas. The book is a compilation of selected papers from the Task Force of the International Lithosphere Program (ILP). It comprises a set of research studies from the Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean domain focusing on (1) the architecture, geodynamic evolution and modelling of the Red Sea rift system and its surroundings, and tectonics and sedimentation in the Gulf of Corinth, (2) the crustal architecture and georesources of the North Algerian Offshore, (3) Reservoirs, aquifers and fluid transfers in Saudi Basins, Petroleum systems and salt tectonics in Yemen and (4) Cretaceous-Eocene foreland inversions in Saudi Arabia.

The Mediterranean Basins

"The coexistence in space and time of growing mountain belts and actively extending basins poses a number of yet unsolved questions in terms of mechanics. This problem is particularly crucial in the Mediterranean regions, where all Cenozoic basins opened in the internal zones of mountain belts." "This volume brings together contributions from geologists and geophysicists in the quest to solve the complex dynamic problem posed by the Mediterranean region. It presents a wealth of new data on various topics centred on the Mediterranean region from the deep mantle structure to the detailed geometry of sedimentary basins."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Geophysics of Reservoir and Civil Engineering

This book is intended for Earth science specialists using geophysical methods, which are applicable to both reservoir studies and civil engineering. In each chapter, the reader will find theoretical concepts, practical rules and, above all, concrete examples of applications. For this reason, the book can be used as a text to accompany course lectures or continuing education seminars.Contents: 1. Methodology for the study of geotechnical problems. 2. From the petroleum field to civil engineering. 3. Theoretical overview of seismic and acoustic techniques. 4. Reflection seismic. 5. Refraction seismic. 6. Well seismic. 7. Acoustic logging. 8. Examples of hydrocarbon field and civil engineering studies. 9. Radar. 10. Role of well logging in geotechnics. 11. Logging and soil mechanics. Bibliography. Index.

"AAPG Memoir 79, The Circum-Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, is the first volume in more than a decade to document such a wide range of research on the geology of this vast area. Of the total 44 papers, roughly two-thirds pertain to the Gulf of Mexico, with an emphasis on the Mexican portion of the basin, and to the petroliferous areas of the southern Caribbean, including Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, and Trinidad and Tobago. The remaining papers relate to the Antilles and Central America, as well as a series of papers that address region-wide topics such as plate tectonic evolution. A significant number of papers were contributed by authors from national oil companies and universities from within the region." --AAPG.

Geophysics for Sedimentary Basins

"This book examines the evolution of geophysical methods for exploring sedimentary basins by describing the internal structure and the nature of the formations found in such basins. The applicability of non-seismic methods is defined together with the conditions for their use. The seismic reflection method is fully described, distinguishing between the basic methods for handling routine problems and their adaptation to more specific or complex problems. The author then finally covers the emerging techniques of the future. Each fully illustrated chapter is a complete topic, easy to read with the mathematical derivations banished to the appendices." - back cover.
