This book examines Canada's collective memory of the First World War through the 1920s and 1930s. It is a cultural history, considering art, music, and literature. Thematically organized into such subjects as the symbolism of the soldier, the implications of war memory for Canadian nationalism, and the idea of a just war, the book draws on military records, memoirs, war memorials, newspaper reports, fiction, popular songs, and films. It takes an unorthodox view of the Canadian war experience as a cultural and philosophical force rather than as a political and military event.

More than 16,000 Canadian soldiers suffered from shell shock during the Great War of 1914 to 1918. Despite significant interest from historians, we still know relatively little about how it was experienced, diagnosed, treated, and managed in the frontline trenches in the Canadian and British forces. How did soldiers relate to suffering comrades? Did large numbers of shell shock cases affect the outcome of important battles? Author Mark Osborne Humphries uses research from Canadian, British, and Australian archives, including hundreds of newly available hospital records and patient medical files, to provide a history of war trauma as it was experienced, treated, and managed by ordinary soldiers.

Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, It Made You Think of Home takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Private Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers in arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever.
