A historical study of the 1925 revolt against French rule in Syria, and how it established a new popular nationalism that helped shape the Middle East. The Great Syrian Revolt of 1925 was the first mass movement against colonial rule in the Middle East. Mobilizing peasants, workers, and army veterans, it was also the region’s largest and longest-lasting anti-colonial insurgency during the inter-war period. Though the revolt failed to liberate Syria from French occupation, it provided a model of popular nationalism and resistance that remains potent in the Middle East today. The Breakdown of the State in Lebanon, 1967–1976
Why did the Lebanese state, the most open and democratic political system in the Middle East, break down between 1967 and 1976? In this major contribution to the debate, Fazel el-Khazen rejects the standard explanations of the Lebanese Civil War and argues instead that the causes were due to the official state ideology, which recognized diversity, dissent and a highly pluralistic population, and then specific external factors: pressures from the Arab-Israeli Conflict, inter-Arab rivalries, and the Palestine Liberation Organization's close connection to Lebanese politics. Using an historical analysis, el-Khazen sheds light on the political situation of the country in the lead up to the conflict and the major role Lebanon's neighbours had in the events. The detailed and comprehensive account uses interviews with the key protagonists in the civil war and analysis of unpublished sources to reveal how and why the breakdown took place.
The Impact of Favouritism on the Business Climate
Favouritism is very common in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, where it is usually referred to as "wasta" (connection). The study by Loewe et al. analyses the impact of wasta on the business climate. It presents the results of extensive empirical research conducted in Jordan providing evidence that wide-spread favouritism affects business-people in different ways. Investors with good wasta can speed up procedures, get exclusive access to services and information and even influence legislation to their advantage. In addition, entrepreneurs tend to invest their time and money in social relations rather than productive capital, because their success depends on their wasta rather than the quality of their products.The study furthermore argues that the fight against favouritism must address four factors: inform people about the negative impact of favouritism on economic development, (ii) give people incentives to stop using their wasta, (iii) delink the use of wasta in people's thinking from beloved socio-cultural norms such as loyalty and solidarity and (iv) reform Jordan's administrative and political system, which lacks transparency and accountability on all levels.
