Northern England in the 1980's is a harsh place for research scientist Fabio De Sousa. He receives an unsolicited message on CSNet, an early email predecessor for academics. Intrigued and flattered, De Sousa begins a flirtatious online relationship. De Sousa and fellow researcher Miguel Gouveia supplement their meagre grants by toiling in the precarious pre-dawn world of the meat industry. De Sousa's online relationship develops, but his friendship with Gouveia becomes threatened by the involvement of Sigma Tau. This clandestine research organisation is hell-bent on obtaining De Sousa's prized research journal. De Sousa is stunned. Not only by the revelations made by his CSNet admirer, but by their true identity. He uses a labyrinthine cipher to preserve the integrity of the research; hoping mentor Dr Eric Geller alone will crack his code. De Sousa and Geller must keep the research details from Sigma-Tau. If they're successful, they guarantee the future of human society. Failure is inconceivable.
From Popular to Insurgent Intellectuals explains how a group of Catholic lay catechists educated in liberation theology came to take up arms and participate on the side of the rebel FMLN during El Salvador’s revolutionary war (1980-92). In the process they became transformed from popular intellectuals to insurgent intellectuals who put their organizational and cognitive skills at the service of a collective effort to create a more egalitarian and democratic society. The book highlights the key roles that peasant catechists in northern Morazán played in disseminating liberation theology before the war and supporting the FMLN during it—as quartermasters, political activists, and musicians...
This two-volume set presents selected and revised papers from the 10th International Conference of Production Research - Americas, ICPR-Americas 2020, held in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, in December 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held in a fully virtual format. The 41 full papers and 11 short papers were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 275 submissions. They are organized in topical sections on optimization; metaheuristics and algorithms; industry 4.0 and cyber-physical systems; smart city; intelligent systems and decision sciences; simulation; machine learning and big data.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th Ibero-American Congress on Smart Cities, ICSC-Cities 2022, held in Cuenca, Ecuador during November 28–30, 2022. The 17 full papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 116 submissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: computational intelligence and urban informatics for smart cities, Internet of things, optimization, smart production, and smart public services and smart monitoring and communications

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a vital part in the continued development of computer science and informatics. The AI applications employed in fields such as medicine, economics, linguistics, philosophy, psychology and logical analysis, not forgetting industry, are now indispensable for the effective functioning of a multitude of systems. This book presents the papers from the 20th biennial European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2012, held in Montpellier, France, in August 2012. The ECAI conference remains Europe's principal opportunity for researchers and practitioners of Artificial Intelligence to gather and to discuss the latest trends and challenges in all subfields of A...
This book is about the unique, sophisticated, and rigorous study of mathematics in Latin America developed over centuries of cultural exchange between Europe, North, and South America. More specifically, the book explores the tradition of mathematical modelling, introduced a century ago. This modelling was adapted to assist members of distinct communities to draw information about their own realities through the elaboration of representations, which generate mathematical knowledge that deals with creativity and invention. The book provides empirical evidence that a category of mathematical modelling developed in Latin America assesses the horizontal and reciprocal relations between mathemati...
