Nation vs. People

The book is provoked by the recent tragedy of Bosnia and the clash within a paradigmatic multicultural society. It offers theoretical responses both to the challenge of Bosnia and to the global challenge of how to reconcile two facts of the modern world and the threat that stems from this: the existence of 200 states, and their commitment to their own integrities, and the existence of 8000 ethnic groups and their devotion to keep their identities alive. The question the book raises is whether nation (state) and democracy are the proper and only answers to these challenges. Presenting conceptual controversies about two of the most discussed and disputed concepts of the present day, the author...

Faith-Based Organizations and Social Welfare

This volume seeks to understand the role and function of religious-based organizations in strengthening associational life through the provision of social services, thereby legitimizing a new role for faith in the formerly secular public sphere. Specifically, we explore how a church in a postcommunist setting, during periods of economic growth and recession in the wake of transitions to capitalism, and with varied numbers of adherents, might contribute to welfare services in a new political regime with freedom of religion. Put another way, what new pressures would be placed on the secular welfare state if religious organizations (Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, others) simply stopped offering their services? By examining public perceptions of the church, changing dynamics of religiosity, and church-state-civil society relations, the volume places these issues in context.

This is a collation of smart quotes, final words and assorted sayings of some of the smartest people who have ever lived. It is a reference book to browse through when your spirits are low. There are no chapters, but I have divided it into four parts for reference sake. As the content belongs not to me, but to the bygone saints of their day, I will attempt to make the digital version of this book 'free to download' as soon as the major digital platforms allow. Whatever profits are made from the paperback edition will be donated to Christian charities. You can recommend a charity by posting it in a review of this work. Examples of what you will find inside - "Prayer is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself." Saint John Vianney. "The heart of the meek is the throne on which the Lord reposes." Saint John Climacus. "The nature of water is soft, and the nature of stone is hard; but if a bottle is hung above the stone, allowing the water to fall down drop by drop, it wears away the stone. So it is with the Word of God: it is soft and our heart is hard, but the man who hears the Word of God often opens his heart to the fear of God." Saint Poemen.

Why are citizens in some countries more willing to pay taxes than in other countries? This book examines the history of the relationship between citizens and their states in five countries, (Sweden, Britain, Italy, Romania, and the United States), and demonstrates how and why people in in some countries have come to trust the government with their money while in other countries they do not. The book explores the evolution of this relationship in detail, in each case showing how some governments developed the fiscal and technical capacity to tax their citizens fairly and deliver public services efficiently. In short, how and why some countries became more trustworthy than others. The volume concludes by examining the implications of these five cases for developing countries today and the lessons that can be learned.

Milligan (educational leadership and policy studies, Florida State U.) notes that in recent years important progress has been made in America's public school system to honor differences in race, ethnicity, culture, gender, and sexual orientation, while ignoring religious identity and diversity. In this scholarly text, he advocates a re-imagining of the teacher in a way that "neither embraces religion as an unquestioned good to be inculcated in students nor rejects it as an artifact of less enlightened times impeding human progress." In support, he offers a reading of Cornel West's notion of prophetic pragmatism and Toni Morrison's Beloved. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
