Suraiya Faroqhi's scholarly contribution to the field of Ottoman history has been prodigious. Her latest book represents a summation of that scholarship, an introduction to the state-of-the-art in Ottoman history. In a compelling exploration of the ways that primary and secondary sources can be used to interpret history, the author reaches out to students and researchers in the field and in related disciplines to familiarise them with these documents. By considering both archival and narrative sources, she explains why they were prepared, encouraging her readers to adopt a critical approach to their findings, and disabusing them of the notion that everything recorded in official documents is necessarily true! While the book is essentially a guide to a complex discipline for those about to embark upon their research, the experienced Ottomanist will find much that is original and provocative in its sophisticated interpretation of the field.
This book generally discusses three main topics connected to the situation of Muslims in Dutch society. First of all, attention is given to the subject of faith and rituals such as the existing mystical orders, mosque sermons and the institutionalization of ritual slaughter. The second subject deals with Islam and the second-generation Muslims in the Netherlands. In this context, the situation of the so-called runaway girls and education in general are discussed. Special attention is given to the development and functioning of Islamic schools and to the education in one's own language and culture. The last topic deals with Muslim organizations, their development and role in the emancipation of these religious groups in Dutch society. Furthermore, obstacles hindering the establishment of a Muslim council on a national level are thoroughly discussed. This book can be of interest to various categories of people, such as scholars (theologians, social scientists, lawyers), policy makers, and those who, through their profession, are in regular contact with members of the Muslim community in the Netherlands.

This book consists of fifteen studies addressed to the relatively recent phenomenon of Muslims residing in North America, their adaptation to an often alien way of life, as well as the problem the larger North American community faces in not only accepting but also benefiting from the existence of this new group. Most of the papers were presented at a symposium on Islam in North America, held at the University of Alberta from May 27 to 31, 1980. In this book the studies are grouped under six major headings: "Islam and the Modern World," "Muslims in North America: Dynamics of Growth," "Muslim Immigrant Communities: Identity and Adaptation," "Islam and the Educational Establishment," "Indigenous Muslims," and "Statements from within the Tradition." It is an excellent introduction to a subject of great interest, fraught with problems and needing further in-depth research.
