A Matter of Choices

When the author became a nuclear physicist, the number of women in the field could be counted on one hand. In this memoir, she reveals her difficult journey to international recognition in physics. She is frank about the ways being a woman has made a difference in her opportunities and choices as a scientist--and how, by being a woman, she has made a difference in the world of physics.

This report is essentially an addendum to a review article by the authors which appeared in Nuclear Physics 11, 1-340 (1959). In the past 3 years so much work has been done on the level structure of the light nuclei that we thought it useful to list these papers and to draw up-todate energy level diagrams. The reference list gives the papers published since the Nuclear Physics article, listed under the nuclei and re-ACTIONS TO WHICH THEY ARE PERTINENT. Papers which led to significant changes in the energy level diagrams are marked by an asterisk. The conventions followed in the diagrams are the same as in the Nuclear Physics article to which the reader is referred for explanations and for a review of the earlier work on the light nuclei. Nuclear Spectroscopy

Nuclear Spectroscopy, Part B focuses on the ways in which experimental data may be analyzed to furnish information about nuclear parameters and nuclear models in terms of which the data are interpreted. This book discusses the elastic and inelastic potential scattering amplitudes, role of beta decay in nuclear physics, and general selection rules for electromagnetic transitions. The nuclear shell model, fundamental coupling procedure, vibrational spectra, and empirical determination of the complex potential are also covered. This publication is suitable for graduate students preparing for experimental research in nuclear spectroscopy, students who have completed graduate-level courses in quantum mechanics and nuclear physics, and specialists who wish to acquire a broader understanding of nuclear spectroscopy.
