Oberst Georg Alexander Hansen (1904–1944) wurde von Zeitzeugen als ein zentraler Protagonist des Widerstandes gegen den Nationalsozialismus identifiziert, der sich »nahezu hauptamtlich« mit dem Staatsstreichversuch des 20. Juli 1944 befasst habe. In der Tat war Hansen ein früher Mitwisser der militärischen Opposition um Ludwig Beck, knüpfte eine Vielzahl von Kontakten zu Gleichgesinnten – darunter Wilhelm Canaris, Hans Oster oder Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg – und nutzte die nachrichtendienstlichen Möglichkeiten, die ihm in leitender Funktion des Amtes Ausland/Abwehr zur Verfügung standen, um die Sache des Widerstandes zu unterstützen.
