Treatment strategies for breast cancer are wide-ranging and often based on a multi-modality approach, depending on the stage and biology of the tumour and the acceptance and tolerance of the patient. They may include surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy (endocrine therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy). Advances in technologies such as oncoplastic surgery, radiation planning and delivery, and genomics, and the development of novel systemic therapy agents alongside their evaluation in ongoing clinical trials continue to strive for improvements in outcomes. In this Special Issue, we publish a collection of studies looking at all forms of therapeutic strategies for early and advanced breast cancer, focusing on their outcomes, notably survival.

Practical Medical Oncology Textbook

This textbook combines essential information on clinical cancer medicine with a guide to the latest advances in molecular oncology and tumor biology. Providing a systematic overview of all types of solid tumors, including epidemiology and cancer prevention, genetic aspects of hereditary cancers, differential diagnosis, typical signs and symptoms, diagnostic strategies and staging, and treatment modalities, it also discusses new and innovative cancer treatments, particularly targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Expert commentaries at the end of each chapter highlight key points, offer insights, suggest further reading and discuss clinical application using case descriptions. This textbook is an invaluable, practice-oriented tool for medical students just beginning their clinical oncology studies, as well as for medical oncology residents and young professionals.

Tumors of the Central Nervous System, Volume 4

This volume mainly contains information on the diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of brain tumors. Insights on the understanding of molecular pathways involved in tumor biology are explained, which should lead to the development of effective drugs. Information on pathways (e.g., hedgehog) facilitates targeted therapies in cancer. Tumor models are also presented, which utilize expression data, pathway sensitivity, and genetic abnormalities, representing targets in cancer. For example, rat model of malignant brain tumors using implantation of doxorubicin with drug eluting beads for delivery is explained. The future of pathway-driven therapies for tumors is summarized. The importance of personal...

Image-guided Radiation Therapy

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is a true revolution in the field of radiation oncology. IGRT provides the unprecedented means of conforming does to the shape of the target tissues in 3-dimensions reducing the risk of complications thereby improving the quality of life of irradiated patients. Moreover, IGRT provides the means to deliver higher than conventional doses thus improving the chance of cure in these patients. Despite its established benefits, several barriers exist to the widespread clinical implementation of IGRT. In the past, great concerns existed regarding the large capital outlay needed for both software and hardware. This barrier is less relevant today given the increased reimbursements possible with IGRT. Today, the most significant barrier is education. IGRT is a fundamentally new approach to both treatment planning and delivery. Adoption of the IGRT approach entails new ways of thinking in regard to patient selection, treatment planning and quality assurance measures. Unfortunately, apart from a few University-based short courses, limited resources are available for the physician and physicist interested in learning IGRT.

This book offers a comprehensive evaluation of the use of stereotactic body radiosurgery (SBRT) for the treatment of prostate cancer. The rationale, selection criteria, and treatment planning for prostate SBRT are explained. Important imaging and anatomic considerations are discussed, and detailed consideration devoted to organ motion and tumor tracking during SBRT. Outcomes of therapy are then examined, with thorough appraisal of side effect profiles and quality of life impacts. Clear guidance is provided on how to deliver the therapy in a way that minimizes the risk of long-term urinary and rectal toxicities. Stereotactic radiosurgery for prostate cancer is an increasingly used form of tre...

Role of SRS/SBRT in Oligometastatic Disease

Oligometastatic disease represents an intermediate state between the early localized disease and widespread metastatic malignancy. Some patients with oligometastatic disease, treated by ablative therapies to all sites of metastatic disease, can achieve long disease-free survival and sometimes cure. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) are accepted treatment options for these patients, achieving high rates of local control. While most of the studies report outcomes of SBRT for solitary oligometastasis, patients with oligometastatic disease might present with multiple concurrent lesions either in the same organ or in neighboring organs. There are few s...

Nuclear Oncology

Nuclear Oncology a contemporary narrative of the role of nuclear medicine in oncology with an emphasis on SPECT/CT and PET/CT with additional comments when appropriate on the potential application of PET/MR and to a lesser degree, targeted radionuclide therapy. This book focuses on the use of radionuclides in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases. It describes relevant approved and investigational clinical applications, instrumentation & technology, chemistry and practical clinical issues in nuclear oncology. The basic science and current research topics of nuclear oncology are addressed in separate chapters. Nuclear medicine has become an essential component to all phases of the...
