Speaking of Slavery

Speaking of Slavery

In this highly original work, Steven A. Epstein shows that the ways Italians employ words and think about race and labor are profoundly affected by the language used in medieval Italy to sustain a system of slavery. The author's findings about the surprising persistence of the "language of slavery" demonstrate the difficulty of escaping the legacy of a shameful past. For Epstein, language is crucial to understanding slavery, for it preserves the hidden conditions of that institution. He begins his book by discussing the words used to conduct and describe slavery in Italy, from pertinent definitions given in early dictionaries, to the naming of slaves by their masters, to the ways in which bo...

The papers included were selected from those given at the 14th international Ezra Pound Conference held at Brunnenburg, Tirolo di Merano, 16-18 July 1991. The guiding principle for organizing the volume was thematic coherence and quality of thought as well as presentation. The articles are gathered under five headings: General Impressions, Traditional Affiliations, Contemporary Connections, Constructing Continuities, and Specific Texts. The exhibitions accompanying the conference are represented and Pound's involvement with Europe is reflected in studies of his relationship with traditional authors as well as his contemporaries. Larger considerations and analysis is offered in Section Four and Cathay, Cantos LXXIII, and Drafts and Fragments are given individual attention.

In Light of Rome

This comprehensive study of Rome’s contribution to the early history of photography traces the medium’s rise from a fledgling science to a dynamic form of artistic expression that forever changed the way we perceive the Eternal City. The authors examine the diverse transnational group of photographers who thrived in the cosmopolitan art center of Rome—and the pivotal role they played in the refinement and technical development of the nascent medium in the nineteenth century. The book ranges from the earliest pioneers—the French daguerreotypist Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey and the Welsh calotypist Calvert Richard Jones—to the work of the Roman School of Photography and its su...
