One of the major challenges of modern neuroscience is to define the complex pattern of neural connections that underlie cognition and behaviour. This atlas capitalises on novel diffusion MRI tractography methods to provide a comprehensive overview of connections derived from virtual in vivo tractography dissections of the human brain.
Handbook of Tractography presents methods and applications of MR diffusion tractography, providing deep insights into the theory and implementation of existing tractography techniques and offering practical advice on how to apply diffusion tractography to research projects and clinical applications. Starting from the design of MR acquisition protocols optimized for tractography, the book follows a pipeline approach to explain the main methods behind diffusion modelling and tractography, including advanced analysis of tractography data and connectomics. An extensive section of the book is devoted to the description of tractography applications in research and clinical settings to give a compl...
The goal of this book is to make a link between fundamental research in the field of cognitive neurosciences, which now benefits from a better knowledge of the neural foundations of cerebral processing, and its clinical application, especially in neurosurgery – itself able to provide new insights into brain organization. The anatomical bases are presented, advances and limitations of the different methods of functional cerebral mapping are discussed, updated models of sensorimotor, visuospatial, language, memory, emotional, and executive functions are explained in detail. In the light of these data, new strategies of surgical management of cerebral lesions are proposed, with an optimization of the benefit–risk ratio of surgery. Finally, perspectives about brain connectivity and plasticity are discussed on the basis of translational studies involving serial functional neuroimaging, intraoperative cortico-subcortical electrical mapping, and biomathematical modeling of interactions between parallel distributed neural networks.
A comprehensive account of the neurobiological basis of language, arguing that species-specific brain differences may be at the root of the human capacity for language. Language makes us human. It is an intrinsic part of us, although we seldom think about it. Language is also an extremely complex entity with subcomponents responsible for its phonological, syntactic, and semantic aspects. In this landmark work, Angela Friederici offers a comprehensive account of these subcomponents and how they are integrated. Tracing the neurobiological basis of language across brain regions in humans and other primate species, she argues that species-specific brain differences may be at the root of the huma...
Anxiety, anger, sadness, shame. Emotions like these are powerful, but God has a good purpose them. Psychologist Kevin Chapman integrates biblical truth, evidence-based insights, and spiritual practices that invite us into a deeper understanding of our own patterns. With God's help, you can experience emotional transformation.
How do we comprehend language? Does our brain differentiate among the different types of grammatical and conceptual information that each sentence we read and listen to contains? Are these mechanisms sensitive to cross-linguistic similarities and differences? To answer these questions, this book provides a comprehensive overview of existing experimental and theoretical studies on language processing. Special emphasis is given here to the analysis of basic building blocks of language – features – and to an approach that relies on the fruitful interaction among theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics and neuroscience.
Medical care is the most critical issue of our time and will be so for the foreseeable future. In this regard, the pace and sophistication of advances in medicine in the past two decades have been truly breathtaking. This has necessitated a growing need for comprehensive reference resources that highlight current issues in specific sectors of medicine. Keeping this in mind, each volume in the Current Issues in Medicine series is a stand‐alone text that provides a broad survey of various important topics in a focused area of medicine—all accomplished in a user-friendly yet interconnected format. This volume addresses advances in medical imaging, detection, and diagnostic technologies. Tec...
