Countering Violent Extremism
This book presents original research on gender and the power dynamics of diverse forms of violent extremism, and efforts to counter them. Based on focus group and interview research with some 250 participants in Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands and UK in 2015 and 2016, it offers insights from communities affected by radicalisation and violent extremism. It introduces the concept of gendered radicalisation, exploring how the multiple factors of paths to violent extremist groups – social, local, individual and global – can differ for both men and women, and why. The book also offers a critical analysis of gender and terrorism; a summary of current policy in the five countries of study and some of the core gendered assumptions prevalent in interventions to prevent violent extremism; a comparison of Jihadi extremism and the far right; and a chapter of recommendations. This book is of use to academics, policy-makers, students and the general reader interested in better understanding a phenomenon defining our times.
The Dark Social Capital of Religious Radicals
With the departure of European Muslims to the “Islamic State” and a wave of terrorist attacks in Europe in recent years, the questions of why and how individuals radicalize to Jihadi extremism attracted keen interest. This thesis examines how individuals radicalize by applying a theoretical framework that primarily refers to social capital theory, the economics of religion, and social movement theory. ‚Islamismus‘ - Prozesse und Bedingungen von Involvierung, Distanzierung und Distanzwahrung
Warum und wie wird jemand zu einem sogenannten Islamisten oder zu einer Islamistin? Wieso, auf welche Weise und wann erfolgen Distanzierungen von solchen Haltungen und Sozialzusammenhängen? Was sind relevante Bedingungen dafür, dass ‚islamistische‘ Ansprachen bei anderen Adressierten nicht verfangen und sie jegliche Involvierung ablehnen? Dies sind die zentralen Fragen, zu denen dieses Buch Antworten präsentiert und daraus abgeleitet Handlungsempfehlungen formuliert. Dafür fasst es den aktuellen Forschungsstand zusammen und informiert über die empirischen Befunde der an der Hochschule Esslingen von 2019 bis 2022 durchgeführten Studie Wendezeit. Es handelt sich um eine auf junge Menschen fokussierte, längsschnittlich angelegte und qualitativ-rekonstruktive Untersuchung. Sie basiert auf Interviews mit 44 ehemalig ‚islamistisch‘ involvierten Proband:innen bzw. mit solchen, die Kontakte zu ‚islamistischen‘ Kontexten hatten, aber Distanz wahrten. In ausgewählten Fällen wurden Gespräche mit Distanzierungsberater:innen und Umfeldangehörigen der Betroffenen in die Auswertung einbezogen.
