This study mirrors the perceptions and values that shape the discussion of such terms as harmonization, recognition, convergence and subsidiarity in the educational sphere. It summarizes the results of a European research project conducted within the EU-funded network PRESTiGE.
This book offers a comparative analysis of the intercultural theories and practices developed in the European context. Bringing together work on the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, The Netherlands and Sweden, it examines specific approaches to intercultural education. Structured around a series of core questions concerning the main features of diverse groups of migrants present within a country and within schools, the major issues raised by scientific research on the presence of migrant students, and the adoption of relevant educational policies and practices to address these issues - together with examples of best practice in each case - Intercultural Education in the European Context explores the strengths and weaknesses of the intercultural education approach adopted in each context. Offering a broad framework for the study of intercultural education as adopted in European settings, the book highlights the contribution of education to the development of a fair, democratic and pluralistic Europe. As such, it will appeal to scholars and policy makers in the field of sociology, migration, education and intercultural relations.
This book draws theoretically and methodologically from the sociology of curriculum, educational policy, and comparative education to meta-analyze the findings of nine separate studies exploring constructions of "Europe" in the secondary school curricula of Social Studies from a number of countries: Germany, Greece, France, Poland, Cyprus, Sweden, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, as well as the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (Spain). The objectives of the book are threefold: first, to explore constructions of "Europe" and "European identity-citizenship" in these countries' curricula; second, to explore whether, and, if so, how these findings indicate a "Europeanization" of national curricula; and third, to discuss the similarities, differences, continuities, discontinuities, and tensions identified when comparing these curricula. In the early 1990s, French officials viewed with some concern the emerging and innovative high-technology sectors of the U.S. and British marketplace. Fearful of falling too far behind, the French government implemented a vast array of policies—from tax incentives for investing in risky high-tech start-ups to new standards for electronic signatures—designed to promote the commercialization of new economy technologies in France. The efforts have turned French innovation policy on its head. Traditional government and bank-financed research and development were replaced by private venture capital. Professionals in France's technical elite—long accustomed to a secure career track in presti...
