Advances in Ceramic Biomaterials

Bioceramics are an important class of biomaterials. Due to their desirable attributes such as biocompatibility and osseointegration, as well as their similarity in structure to bone and teeth, ceramic biomaterials have been successfully used in hard tissue applications. In this book, a team of materials research scientists, engineers, and clinicians bridge the gap between materials science and clinical commercialization providing integrated coverage of bioceramics, their applications and challenges. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is a review of classes of medical-grade ceramic materials, their synthesis and processing as well as methods of property assessment. The secon...

"An essential resource guide to these incredibly important and versatile materials. The book covers everything from the types, structures, mechanics and properties of ceramics and glasses, to the testing, characterization, modeling and applications of these materials. Important recent developments are also considered, including additive manufacturing methods, polymer derived ceramics, advanced sintering/densification methods, modern analytical and testing methods, and novel applications of ceramics. This expertly-edited collection of articles provides a comprehensive source of high-quality foundational material for students (undergraduate and postgraduate), as well as postdoctoral researchers and those working in Industry (product and process development). Particular effort has been made to complement and support the 0́8blended learning0́9 approach championed by both the American and European Ceramic Societies and EU Erasmus programme (EUCERMAT). As such, this encyclopedia is the ideal resource to facilitate collaborative, long distance education in the field."--Publisher.

Wall-mounted memorials (or ‘epitaphs’) enjoyed great popularity across the Burgundian Netherlands. Usually installed in churches above graves, they combine images with inscriptions and take the form of sculpted reliefs, brass plaques, or panel paintings. They preserved the memory of the dead and reminded the living to pray for their souls. On occasions, renowned artists like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden were closely involved in memorials’ creation. In Pious Memories Douglas Brine examines the wall-mounted memorial as a distinct category of funerary monument and shows it to be a significant, if overlooked, aspect of fifteenth-century Netherlandish art. The patronage, functions, and meanings of these objects are considered in the context of contemporary commemorative practices and the culture of memoria. Brine received the 2015 Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize, for an earlier version of Chapter 5 of Pious Memories, his article, “Jan van Eyck, Canon Joris van der Paele, and the Art of Commemoration,” published in the September 2014 issue of The Art Bulletin.

La justice administrative

  • Categories: Law

Fifty-one papers drawn from the June 1998 symposium. The papers cover aspects of the applications of nitrides in ceramics, metallic alloys, glasses, composites, coatings, sensors, catalysts, and electronic thin films. The role played by nitrogen in improving and modifying the properties of materials is discussed from both the practical and theoretical points of view. A wide variety of branches of materials science and engineering are represented concerning the role of nitrogen in improving and modifying materials.
