The Papers of Francis Hogg span the years 1958-1970. These consist of teaching materials for the various courses that he taught at the then Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences of the University of Pittsburgh. The materials include lecture notes, syllabi, reading lists and exam questions to some of the courses. Some of the teaching materials were first used in his teaching engagements in Wales. Also included are student projects for both Masters and Doctoral students. This part of the collection is arranged alphabetically by course and then numerically by course code. The collection also includes correspondence, the bulk of which is between him and colleagues, although a small amount is with friends and family. Additionally, there are materials from talks and lectures to students and faculty in universities across the United States and Canada and at other institutions like the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and Akron Public Libraries, as well as publications in the form of reports, articles and conference papers. These deal mostly with the development of libraries and library education. Also included is a photograph, presumably of his two sons, on a metal plate.

Geoffrey Howse delves into the his crime files covering 200 years of the area's darkest past. Events covered include long forgotten cases that made the headlines in their day as well as others more famous: Britain's first railway murder, the first criminal to be caught via wireless telegraphy and the anarchists who left a trail of murder and mayhem following a raid on a Tottenham factory. There are many other cases to appeal to anyone with an interest in the local and social history of North London.

This book sheds new light on James Hogg, the Scottish poet (1770-1835), going beyond the 'Ettrick Shepherd' stereotype. By focussing on Hogg's poetry (Scottish Pastorals, The Queen's Wake, Jacobite Relics, Queen Hynde, Pilgrims of the Sun) it shows that his work, and the critical response to it, was significantly shaped by the concept of the autodidact: a working-class writer who was considered to be a poet of 'Nature's Making'. The image of the autodidact is pursued from its beginnings - Ramsay's Gentle Shepherd, Macpherson's Ossian, Burns as 'ploughman poet' - through its development in the nineteenth century, to its last gasps in the twentieth. Poets considered include Isobel Pagan, Janet...

Yikes, You Can See My Underpants!

There was nothing special about Frank. He thought he was an ordinary guy, living an ordinary life until one day he discovered that wasn't true. This book relates some of his early adventures and stories that show just how unordinary Frank is. From the nonchalant kid's habit of hopping trains to get to the park, through loosing his virginity in a most hilarious way, to almost dealing drugs in his beatnik year. Frank has led a most extraordinary life. A very pleasant, humorous, insightful and throughly enjoyable read.
