Venus "Bronzie" Dalghetti is a young man leading an ordinary life-wife, Marisol and two children. Everything is going as planned-until the tragic accident. He doesn't believe he is dead; Bronzie thinks he's been kidnapped by Quako, who claims to be his soul. He demands to be returned to his family. After being shown his gravestone, then attending his wife's birthday party, where no one acknowledged him, he realized that he has passed on. Quako shows Bronzie a long, gray wall. When someone leaves their earthly body, they arrive at this wall, where they choose a baby about to be born to inhabit it and be the baby's soul. Bronzie is to be a soul of a boy who grows up to be president of Guyana. Bronzie balks, but Quako says Marisol will also be in Guyana, as the soul of a baby girl. So Bronzie agrees. Bronzie helps William towards the presidency while looking for Marisol. Finally, he finds Marisol, the soul of Carmen and William's girlfriend. Bronzie and Marisol are together again.

Complications arise as one of the in-laws is shot dead, and soon thereafter two dead bodies are uncovered by workers repairing sewer lines near the Coconino National Forest. The lawyer for Emil and Rosemary DiBiasi, Jake Jacoby, proves that he has some interests that are far outside of the law. Millie, a waitress at the Lone Pine Restaurant in Munds Park gives an assist to Detectives Orsen Carter and Wes Mitzer as they explore possible connections of some customers to the crimes. Sleuthing activity spreads to areas of Mesa, Phoenix, and Tempe when it is found that there is a relationship between the two separate crimes, even though they occurred 140 miles apart and little Lake Odell gives up an important clue. A little forest squirrel is an important character in the mystery.
