Since there were no census records for Franklin County until 1830 (1790-1810 Georgia census records were lost during a fire in the War of 1812. The 1820 Georgia census does not include Franklin County), deeds and land records offer the only source of information for this county.The records compiled in this book are important to those researching their African-American roots, those with ancestors who moved from Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, as well as many other counties in Georgia. Keep in mind, if your ancestor fought in the Revolutionary War, he may have moved to Georgia in order to participate in the many land grants and lotteries. This document is a petition of the citizens of the Franklin County (Ga.) to the unnamed Governor (probably Edward Telfair (1786-1787, 1790-1793), possibly George Mathews (1793-1796), dated November 11, 1793. The petitioners explain the role of a troop of horsemen, under the command of Owen L. Bowens, who have kept the inhabitants of Franklin County (Ga.) protected from Indian attacks. They ask that the Governor allow for the continuance of said troop. Twenty signatures of Franklin County petitioners appear on the document.

This document is a petition from sundry citizens of Franklin County (Ga.) to Georgia Governor Edward Telfare [i.e. Telfair] (1786-1787, 1790-1793), dated January 1, 1793. The western frontier of Franklin County is having troubles with the Indian attacks and inquires why previous promises of government protection have not materialized. The petitioners request assistance and supplies. The petition is signed by over 50 citizens of Franklin County (Ga.).
