Development with Identity
This book reports on a 6-year interdisciplinary research project on sustainable agriculture and natural resource management in Cotacachi, Ecuador, where scientists and indigenous groups seek common ground. It discusses how local people have engaged the environment over time to create contemporary Andean landscapes. Human-environment interaction in relation to biodiversity, soils and water, and equitable development are also discussed. This book is intended for social and biological scientists researching environment and agriculture in rural communities. The book has 21 chapters and a subject index.
From Technische Hochschule to research university
This volume takes a look at the past – at the last 50 years in particular – and a look at the present, painting a picture of how the Imperial Royal Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1815, became the Technische Universität Wien – the "TU Wien" – with the launch of the 1975 University Organisation Act, and has increasingly developed into a research university ever since. Contemporaries from the years when the TU Wien was still the TH in Vienna have a place to tell their stories in this volume, alongside articles on interfaculty research facilities and service centres that support research activities and transfer of research results in accordance with the TU Wien's motto, “Technology for people”. The Agricultural Cooperative in the Framework of the European Cooperative Society
This book assesses the Statute for a European Cooperative Society (SCE) regarding agricultural activities by comparing how specific questions arising in this context must be dealt with under the Italian and Austrian legal systems. In this regard, Council Regulation (EC) No. 1435/2003, of 22 July 2003, on the Statute for a European Cooperative Society (SCE), is used as a tool for the structured analysis of various aspects of agricultural cooperatives. However, a comparison is only meaningful if the results are made comparable on the basis of a previously defined standard. Accordingly, the study uses, on one hand, a cooperative model developed by European legal scholars that defines general guidelines on how cooperatives should function (PECOL). On the other, the results are presented in connection with economic considerations to discuss how efficient rules can be developed.
Common European Legal Thinking
Common European Legal Thinking emanates from the existence of a shared European legal culture as especially reflected in the existence of a common European constitutional law. It denotes a body of individual constitutional principles – written and unwritten – that represent the common heritage of the constitutions of the Member States. Taking into account the two major European organisations, the Council of Europe and especially the European Union, the essays of this Festschrift discuss a range of constitutional principles, including the rule of law, democracy, and the exercise of political power in a multilevel system which recognises fundamental rights as directly applicable and supreme law. Other essays examine the value of pluralism, the commitment of private organisations to uphold public values, principles or rules, and the objectives and methods of a transnational science of administrative law. These articles highlight the fact that the Ius Publicum Europaeum Commune is “politically” in the making, which can often be seen in the shape of general legal principles. The publication recognises the role of Albrecht Weber as a forerunner of Common European Legal Thinking.
