Its wide appeal stems from its invitation both to entertain the monster and to widen the call to and the listening for the monsters that have not yet, and perhaps must not yet, come calling back. Gaston Crunelle and Flute Playing in Twentieth-Century France
Gaston Crunelle (1898--1990) was Professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatory from 1941 to 1969 and taught an entire generation of the world's leading flutists. A leading orchestral, chamber music, and solo flutist, his recordings are among the best of the 78-rpm and early LP eras. Gaston Crunelle and Flute Playing in Twentieth-Century France establishes Crunelle's place in history as one of the most important flutists of the twentieth century and shines light on musical life in France during his lifetime from the silent film era, through the German Occupation, to the changes in music and education since 1968.
The Poetic Music of Wallace Stevens
Wallace Stevens’s musicality is so profound that scholars have only begun to grasp his ties to the art of music or the music of his own poetry. In this study, two long-time specialists present a polyphonic composition in which they pursue various interlocking perspectives. Their case studies demonstrate how music as a temporal art form may affect a poetic of ephemerality, sensuous experience, and affective intensification. First published in 2011, this research study includes a biography section as well as the works of Gabriel Urbain Fauré born on 12 May 1845. Much of Fauré’s music, especially the late pieces, remain little played and little known—as a result, his reputation as a salon composer of pleasant music continues even among educated musicians. The author suggests that it is more likely that the difficulty of much of Fauré’s music for the listener and the demands it places upon him or her are the principal reasons for its omission from concert programs and for a misunderstanding of Fauré’s place in the history of French music
