Registers of the Births, Marriages, and Deaths of the "Eglise Françoise À la Nouvelle York,"

Of the several Huguenot establishments founded in the United States, that of New York is the first in date and, in most respects, the first in importance. The records in this work comprise the existing baptismal, marriage, and death records of the French Church of New York from 1688 to 1804, together with a few other records belonging to the New Rochelle "Annex." Although the records have not been translated into English, the language of the entries is so simple that even those who do not read French can easily understand it. The records of the church cover the important period of immigration after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. An extensive index contains every name in the records, including maiden names of the brides and names of witnesses, sponsors, parents, and pastors. This reprint is excerpted from "Collections of the Huguenot Society of America," Volume 1 (1886).

Mozart and Enlightenment Semiotics

"In Mozart and Enlightenment Semiotics, Stephen Rumph shifts the ground of interpretation for late eighteenth century European music by reinstating the semiotics and language theory of the period. In so doing, Rumph challenges and reappraises current orthodoxies. These challenges are extremely valuable, bravely offered, and intuitively right as well as convincingly argued." —Matthew Head, author of Orientalism, Masquerade and Mozart's Turkish Music "Stephen Rumph’s book is, to my knowledge, the first successful attempt to ground classical music in its contemporaneous intellectual context. In this respect, Rumph’s book is a great achievement. It is an imaginative tour-de-force bursting ...

This new work surveys how rapid changes taking place at the start of the twenty-first century in social, cultural, political and economic domains impact on sexuality, health and human rights. The relationships between men, women and children are changing quickly, as are traditional family structures and gender norms. What were once viewed as private matters have become public, and an array of new social movements – transgender, intersex, sex worker, people living with HIV – have come into the open. The book is split into three sections: Global ‘Sex’ Wars – discusses the notion of sexualities, its political landscapes internationally, and the return of religious fervour and extremis...

When People Come First

A people-centered approach to global health When People Come First critically assesses the expanding field of global health. It brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars to address the medical, social, political, and economic dimensions of the global health enterprise through vivid case studies and bold conceptual work. The book demonstrates the crucial role of ethnography as an empirical lantern in global health, arguing for a more comprehensive, people-centered approach. Topics include the limits of technological quick fixes in disease control, the moral economy of global health science, the unexpected effects of massive treatment rollouts in resource-poor co...
