Several of his works were made into films. A caricature of him is on the wall of Sardi's restaurant.He lived in Maryland.He married twice, first to the playwright Clare Kummer with whom he had two children. He also had three more children.A Liberty Ship was named after him during World War II.His son Frederic Arnold Kummer Jr. was also a writer.In testimony to the Special Committee on Un-American Activities, he was noted as a member of the Lincoln Brigade executive committee.

Frederic Arnold Kummer (1873-1943), was an American author, playwright and screen writer, who also wrote as Arnold Fredericks. In 1894, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he had earned a degree in civil engineering. In 1901, he was awarded the Collingwood prize by the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was the chief engineer for the American Wood Preserving Company and later general manager of the Eastern Paving Block Company. In 1907, he turned to writing full time.
