Crossing the Boundaries

"This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop "Crossing the Boundaries: Gauge Dynamics at Strong Coupling", hosted by the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute at the University of Minnesota, May 14 - 17, 2009. The workshop honored the 60th birthday of Professor Misha Shifman and his outstanding achievements in the field of gauge dynamics. The meeting attracted a fascinating group of researchers working on the cutting edge of dynamics of gauge theories, including supersymmetric and stringtheories. Their talks covered a wide area of recent developments in the field."--Publisher's website.

The Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research SIN

This book tells the story of the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (SIN). The institute was founded in 1968 and became part of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in 1988. Its founding occurred at a time when physics was generally considered the key discipline for technological and social development. This step was unusual for a small country like Switzerland and showed courage and foresight. Equally unusual were the accomplishments of SIN, compared with similar institutes in the rest of the world, as well as its influence on Swiss, and partially also on international politics of science. That this story is now available in a widely understandable form is due to the efforts of some physicists, who took the initiative as long as contemporary witnesses could still be questioned. As is usually the case, official documents always show just an excerpt of what really happened. An intimate portrayal of people who contributed to success requires personal memories. This text relies on both sources. In addition, the events are illustrated with numerous photos.

The two-volume set Lectures on QCD provides an introductory overview of Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions. In a series of pedagogically written articles based on lectures given over the years to graduate students, the fundamentals of QCD are discussed and significant application areas are described. The field-theoretic basis of QCD is the focus of the first volume, while the application of QCD to the phenomenology of strong interactions forms the subject of the second volume.

Topology and Geometry in Physics

Application of the concepts and methods of topology and geometry have led to a deeper understanding of many crucial aspects in condensed matter physics, cosmology, gravity and particle physics. This book can be considered an advanced textbook on modern applications and recent developments in these fields of physical research. Written as a set of largely self-contained extensive lectures, the book gives an introduction to topological concepts in gauge theories, BRST quantization, chiral anomalies, supersymmetric solitons and noncommutative geometry. It will be of benefit to postgraduate students, educating newcomers to the field and lecturers looking for advanced material.

Spin Excitations in Nuclei

This volume contains the proceedings of the "International Conference on Spin Excitations in Nuclei" held in Telluride, Colo rado, March 25-27, 1982. The motivation for the conference was, in a large part due to the recent development of new variable energy accelerators which produce high quality beams of electrons, protons, and pions that are providing the first precise information on spin excitations in nuclei over a large range of spin and mass. In the past such data had been restricted primarily to light nuclei and were generally resolution limited. Perhaps, the most exciting new result has been the clear observation of the elusive spin-dipole strength (Gamow Teller and Ml) in medium and...
