Full Circle is written in an engaging style making the reader believe at times that they are in conversation with the author. The warmth in some chapters comes through like sitting by a log fire, but the shocking start to her life has chilling comparisons with current day events. Whilst many of the stories within the book are brushed with humour it relates how, from a deeply sad and tragic beginning, Mady really took hold of her life. Through her fantastic eye for colour and her unique creative talent she became a business and social success befriended by many internationally known people who could never have guessed how her life had started. The 'full circle' is completed in a way that the reader would not expect.

Michael Palin's terrific account of his journey through 18 countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, published by Phoenix for the first time. For almost a year, Michael Palin travelled through 18 countries on the perimeter of the world's largest ocean, in a spectacular journey of contrasts, drama and beauty. From head-hunters in Borneo to a meal of maggots in Mexico, his route takes him to some of the most politically volatile and physically demanding places on Earth. Whether climbing the Exalted Mountains in China, dodging icebergs in Chile, or being taken short on the banks of the Amazon, Michael Palin paints a vivid picture of the people and places around him. 'It was a journey of dazzling surprises and jarring extremes. Beauty and ugliness, sophistication and squalor, unceasing urban noise and monastic tranquility ... This is a record of a year of wonder' Michael Palin.
When thirteen-year-old Joanna Rowsell Shand decided to take on a challenge set by representatives from British Cycling, she didn't realize that the decision would change her life, leading her to Olympic glory. She was mainly motivated by the prospect of escaping a double maths lesson. In fact, Jo's power output was off the chart - the highest ever recorded for a female of her age - and she was talent-spotted for the junior cycling team. But with no experience in the sport, Jo was well behind her peers, who had been prepped for life on a bike since infancy. In addition, Jo was - and remains - a very shy girl, not least because of her condition, alopecia universalis, which took her hair from her just as her teenage years were about to strike. Candid, poignant and written with characteristic honesty and self-deprecating wit, this is a story of grit, determination and triumph over adversity that will leave you feeling inspired.
So much about the society that is now emerging in the twenty-first century bears an astonishing resemblance to the most prominent features of what we call the classical world - its institutions, its priorities, its entertainment, its physics, its sexual morality, its food, its politics, even its religion. The ways in which we live our rich and varied lives correspond - almost eerily so - to the ways in which the Greeks and Romans lived theirs. Whether we are eating and drinking, bathing or exercising or making love, pondering, admiring or enquiring, our habits of thought and action, our diversions and concentrations recreate theirs. It is as though the 1500 years after the fall of Rome had been time out from traditional ways of being human. This eye-opening book makes us look afresh at who we are and how we got here. Full Circleis not only wonderfully witty and brilliantly astute, but also profound and often disquieting. Ferdinand Mount effortlessly peels back 2000 years of history to show how much we are like the ancients, how in ways both trivial and crucial we arethem and they are us.
