The Gentlemen of Gloucester

This is an account of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry. Founded in 1774, the Troop is a U.S. Army unit that elects its own leaders and owns its own armory. By 18th-century tradition, men who would qualify to serve as officers in other units choose instead to enlist in the Troop as privates and forgoe their military pay. Since the American Revolution, the Troop has functioned as an ad-hoc leadership school. Since 1774, seventeen of its members have attained the rank of general. Others have been businessmen, philanthropists, diplomats, statesmen (with rogues and ne'er-do-wells mixed in)... and even the third astronaut to walk on the moon. As a social fraternity and combat unit, the modern Troop still retains its early cultural melding of Quaker humility and cavalier panache. Its members have recently deployed to Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, and Kuwait.

There is a lot of justified concern today about "toxic masculinity". In a time of gender confusion, the #metoo movement, and delayed maturation of youth, delinquent male behavior seems to be all too common. What can be done? Why not resurrect the idea of the GENTLEMAN? This book explores that ideal as refined over millennia by Hebrew mystics, Greek philosophers, Medieval knights, Renaissance courtiers, British educators, and enlightenment-era Americans. The author describes how he learned to incorporate their timeless principles into his own life through a twenty-year process of trial and error. Ultimately, the main thrust is about being as strong and cultivated as possible while always putting others above self-and doing so with style.

Wetland Carbon and Environmental Management

Explores how the management of wetlands can influence carbon storage and fluxes. Wetlands are vital natural assets, including their ability to take-up atmospheric carbon and restrict subsequent carbon loss to facilitate long-term storage. They can be deliberately managed to provide a natural solution to mitigate climate change, as well as to help offset direct losses of wetlands from various land-use changes and natural drivers. Wetland Carbon and Environmental Management presents a collection of wetland research studies from around the world to demonstrate how environmental management can improve carbon sequestration while enhancing wetland health and function. Volume highlights include: Ov...
