History of Italy and Europe during the period 1494-1534 by the Italian historian and humanist Francesco Guicciardini, the twenty books arranged in two parts: one containing books 1-16, the other books 17-20. The first edition of 1561 appeared some twenty years after the death of Guicciardini, published under the direction of Guicciardini's nephew, Agnolo Guicciardini, and printed in Venice by Lorenzo Torrentino. The first edition, as well as those of 1562 and 1563, included only the first sixteen books of the history, since the last four--Books 17-20--remained unfinished.
