Autoimmune Liver Disease

Autoimmune Liver Disease

No standard pharmacological treatments have been developed yet for the diseases, which are expected to become more prevalent because of growing rates of exposure to a increased variety of xenobiotics from diets, medicines, and the environment. Immunologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and clinicians here share their understanding of the disease's etiology and relation to extra-hepatic factors. Among basic mechanisms of pathogenesis they consider are tolerance and autoimmunity, receptor-mediated experimental hepatic apoptosis, and lessons from animal models. The clinical aspects discussed include genetic aspects, natural course and long-term outcome, the distinction between autoimmune and viral liver diseases, and immunosuppressive therapy. The 12 papers were presented at a January 1997 workshop in Konstanz, Germany. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Autoantibodies and Autoimmunity

This is the first book to address all aspects of the biology of autoantibodies in a single volume, including a discussion of immunology, experimental models, clinical aspects, and the use of autoantibodies as probes in molecular and cellular biology. The editor, currently professor at the W.M. Keck Autoimmune Disease Center of The Scripps Research Institute, has assembled an all-star team of authors to report on the latest research, technologies, and applications. Following an introductory chapter, the book goes on to cover such topics as cellular mechanisms of autoantibody production, clinical and diagnostic usefulness in human disease, and animal models used to study the elicitation of autoantibodies. The whole is rounded off with a look at future perspectives. With its comprehensive coverage, this volume will appeal not only to immunologists and clinicians but also to cell and molecular biologists.

Immunology of Liver Disease

The role of the immune response in both the pathology of liver disease and in the modulation ofliver injury has been the subject of intense research. This book aims to present the current understanding of the involvement of the immune response in liver disease. The first chapters examine the role of the immune response in viral infections of the liver. These viruses cause hepatitis of varying severity and it is thought that many of the mechanisms responsible for liver cell injury are immunologically mediated. In addition three of these viruses, hepatitic B, C, and D, are associated with persistent infection and chronic liver disease. The role of the immune response in viral persistence is di...

This updated text explains how advances in mammalian and plant genetics contribute to better therapeutics agents and more wholesome foods. It addresses such topics as new pharmaceutical agents, agribiotechnology, safety evaluation of biotechnology-derived drugs, food safety, nutritional science, and regulatory and environmental aspects of genetically-modified organisms. New to this edition are chapters on biotherapeutics and herbicide-resistant crops. It should be of interest to biotechnology, toxicologists, pharmaceutical scientists, environmental scientists and agriculturists.
