I Went for a Walk

In February 2016, Gabriel Stewart embarked on a walk around the UK with just a backpack, a camera and a tent for company. With little previous experience of hiking or camping on his own, it was always going to be an interesting one. This isn’t your typical hiking book, wittering on about the cold fierce winds battering Gabriel’s determined face as he treads across a mountainside. It’s an exploration of the mind of a confused, self-deprecating eighteen- to nineteen-year-old boy as he dibbles and dabbles in everything from mental health problems to the fake radio voice of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. ‘I will walk a thousand miles and it will be for charity - and maybe some other reason which I may or may not discover at some point in a random soggy British field.’ That pretty much sums up the logic. I Went for a Walk is the story of how it all went spectacularly wrong.

So Many Books

"Gabriel Zaid's defense of books is genuinely exhilarating. It is not pious, it is wise; and its wisdom is delivered with extraordinary lucidity and charm. This is how Montaigne would have written about the dizzy and increasingly dolorous age of the Internet. May So Many Books fall into so many hands."—Leon Wieseltier "Reading liberates the reader and transports him from his book to a reading of himself and all of life. It leads him to participate in conversations, and in some cases to arrange them…It could even be said that to publish a book is to insert it into the middle of a conversation."—from So Many Books Join the conversation! In So Many Books, Gabriel Zaid offers his observati...

'A comfortable chair and a Mary Stewart: total heaven. I'd rather read her than most other authors.' Harriet Evans Legend has it that when the Gabriel Hounds run howling over the crumbling palace of Dar Ibrahim, high in the Adonis Valley of Lebanon, death will follow on their heels. When rich, spoilt Christie Mansel arrives at the decaying palace to look after her eccentric Aunt Harriet, she arrives to the sound of howling dogs. The palace is riddled with hidden passages and the servants are unwilling to let anyone see Harriet during the day. It seems the palace hides an extraordinary secret . . . one that somebody is willing to kill to keep. The deep blue oblong of sky above the open court was pricking already with brilliant stars. No ugly diffusion of city light spoiled the deep velvet of that sky; even hanging as it was above the glittering and crowded richness of the Damascus oasis, it spoke of the desert and the vast empty silence beyond the last palm tree.

The Enduring Classroom

"Much has been written about the quality and practice of teaching for the last century and a half or so. Most of that writing has been about how teachers should teach, but here celebrated education scholar Larry Cuban turns to the lessons we can learn by examining both how teachers used to teach and how they teach today. Knowing both is important; reformers eager to implement innovative techniques and policies must know first how US teachers have actually taught and do teach today if they are to make suggestions that might actually effect change. Cuban's research takes us into classrooms, both through contemporary observations undertaken for research and a rich historical archive of classroo...
