Heparin - A Century of Progress

Heparins remain amongst the most commonly used drugs in clinical practice. Almost 100 years have passed since the initial discovery of this complex substance and, during this time, understanding of the nature and uses of heparin and related molecules has grown dramatically. The aim of this volume is to summarise the developments that have led to the current status of both heparins as drugs and the field of heparin research, with a focus on the particularly rapid progress that has been made over the past three decades. Individual sections are dedicated to the nature of heparin as a biological molecule, the current approaches and techniques that are used to ensure the safety and reliability of heparin as a medicine, the clinical pharmacology of heparin as an anticoagulant drug, effects and potential applications of heparin aside of those involving haemostasis and, finally, the nature and potential uses of heparin-like materials from both natural and synthetic sources.

Sudden Cardiac Death, An Issue of Heart Failure Clinics

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the number one killer in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 300,000 Americans every year. Thus, it is important for heart failure specialists to be knowledgeable about strategies to prevent, manage risk for, and treat conditions leading to sudden cawrdiac death. These topics and more are covered in this issue.

Rewriting the Orient

In this ambitious volume, Yunfei Bai delves into the creative adaptations of classical Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan literary texts by four renowned nineteenth- and early twentieth-century authors in France and Argentina: Theophile Gautier, Stephane Mallarme, Victor Segalen, and Jorge Luis Borges. Without any knowledge of the source languages, the authors crafted their own French and Spanish retellings based on received translations of these Asian works. Rewriting the Orient not only explores the so far untapped translation-rewriting continuum to trace the pivotal role of Orientalism in the formation of a singular corpus of world literature that goes beyond the Anglophone canon, but also sheds light on a wide range of innovative discursive strategies that readily challenge traditional notions of cultural appropriation.

This is Suresh Subrahmanyan’s third volume of tongue-in-cheek vignettes on a variety of subjects. There is no topic or issue under the sun that does not come under his genial and articulate gaze. He wields his pen, in a manner of speaking, with considerable panache and style. His love for the English language is amply evident in the way in which he crafts every sentence with minute care. He is greatly influenced by the British school of writing and the great authors from that formidable stable. He is unapologetic about adopting a slightly old-fashioned style, as he believes the present generation who read (and that tribe is rapidly dwindling) should appreciate that this is the language of Shakespeare and Milton, without the likes of whom we would all be talking to each other with a vocabulary that does not go beyond words like cool, awesome, shoot, OMG and lowbrow slang like my bad, I’m good, and get a life, bro. In the author’s own words, “Texting trumps writing and language pays the price.” Suresh Subrahmanyan tries to make amends.

Entrepreneurial Impact

"Entrepreneurial Impact: The Role of MIT -- An Updated Report helps us understand the economic impact of the entrepreneurial ventures of university graduates. We know that some universities play an important role in many economies through their core education, research and development, and other spillovers... While MIT's leadership in developing successful entrepreneurs has been evident anecdotally, this study--one of the largest surveys of entrepreneur alumni ever conducted--quantifies the significant impact of MIT's entrepreneurial ecosystem that supports firm startups."--P.[4] of cover
