The collection of articles in this book offers a penetrating shaft into the still burgeoning subject of light propagation and localization in photonic crystals and disordered media. While the subject has its origins in physics, it has broad significance and applicability in disciplines such as engineering, chemistry, mathematics, and medicine. Unlike other branches of physics, where the phenomena under consideration require extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, energy, or isolation from competing effects, the phenomena related to light localization survive under the most ordinary of conditions. This provides the science described in this book with broad applicability and vitality. How...
This massive three volume set publishes the proceedings of the 2006 Limes conference which was held in Leon, a total of 138 contributions. Naturally these cover a vast range of topics related to Roman military archaeology and the Roman frontiers. The archaeology of the Roman military in Spain, and contributions by Spanish scholars are prominent, whilst other themes include the internal frontiers, the end of the frontiers and the barbarians in the empire, the fortified town in the late Roman period, soldiers on the move and the early development of frontiers . Further sessions had a regional focus. Majority of essays in English, some in Spanish, German and Italian
Data science is an emerging field and innovations in it need to be explored for the success of society 5.0. This book not only focuses on the practical applications of data science to achieve computational excellence, but also digs deep into the issues and implications of intelligent systems. This book highlights innovations in data science to achieve computational excellence that can optimize performance of smart applications. The book focuses on methodologies, framework, design issues, tools, architectures, and technologies necessary to develop and understand data science and its emerging applications in the present era. Data Science and Innovations for Intelligent Systems: Computational Excellence and Society 5.0 is useful for the research community, start-up entrepreneurs, academicians, data-centered industries, and professeurs who are interested in exploring innovations in varied applications and the areas of data science.
This thesis devotes three introductory chapters to outlining basic recipes for constructing the quantum Hamiltonian of an arbitrary superconducting circuit, starting from classical circuit design. Since a superconducting circuit is one of the most promising platforms for realizing a practical quantum computer, anyone who is starting out in the field will benefit greatly from this introduction. The second focus of the introduction is the ultrastrong light-matter interaction (USC), where the latest developments are described. This is followed by three main research works comprising quantum memory in USC; scaling up the 1D circuit to a 2D lattice configuration; creation of Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum era quantum error correction codes and polariton-mediated qubit-qubit interaction. The research work detailed in this thesis will make a major contribution to the development of quantum random access memory, a prerequisite for various quantum machine learning algorithms and applications.
Multimodality Imaging Guidance for Interventional Pain Management is a comprehensive resource that covers fluoroscopy-guided procedures, ultrasound interventions, and computed tomography (CT)-guided procedures used in interventional pain management. Fluoroscopy-guided procedures have been the standard of care for many years and are widely available and affordable. Due to the lack of radiation exposure and the ability to see various soft tissue structures, ultrasound-guided interventions are more precise and safer. Primarily performed by radiologists, the benefits, disadvantages, and basic techniques of CT-guided procedures are also included in the volume. By covering all imaging modalities, Multimodality Imaging Guidance for Interventional Pain Management allows for an efficient comparison of the capabilities of each modality.
An extensive guide to the legionary fortresses of the Roman Empire, including locations, history, layout, and more. This is a reference guide to Roman legionary fortresses throughout the former Roman Empire, of which approximately eighty-five have been located and identified. With the expansion of the empire and the garrisoning of its army in frontier regions during the 1st century AD, Rome began to concentrate its legions in large permanent bases. Some have been thoroughly explored while others are barely known, but this book brings together for the first time the legionary fortresses of the whole empire. An introductory section outlines the history of legionary bases and their key components. At the heart of the book is a referenced and illustrated catalogue of the known bases, each with a specially prepared plan and an aerial photograph. A detailed bibliography provides up-to-date publication information. The book includes a website providing links to sites relevant to particular fortresses and a Google Earth file containing all of the known fortress locations.
During the lifetime of Augustus (from 63 B.C. to A.D. 14), Roman civilization spread at a remarkable rate throughout the ancient world, influencing such areas as art and architecture, religion, law, local speech, city design, clothing, and leisure and family activities. In his newest book, Ramsay MacMullen investigates why the adoption of Roman ways was so prevalent during this period.Drawing largely on archaeological sources, MacMullen discovers that during this period more than half a million Roman veterans were resettled in colonies overseas, and an additional hundred or more urban centers in the provinces took on normal Italian-Roman town constitutions. Great sums of expendable wealth came into the hands of ambitious Roman and local notables, some of which was spent in establishing and advertising Roman ways. MacMullen argues that acculturation of the ancient world was due not to cultural imperialism on the part of the conquerors but to eagerness of imitation among the conquered, and that the Romans were able to respond with surprisingly effective techniques of mass production and standardization.
Pneumonia is an infectious disease of the pulmonary alveoli that leads to extensive morbidity and mortality. This book presents a comprehensive overview of this disease with chapters on hospital-acquired pneumonia, drug-related problems and hospital readmissions, secondary bacterial infections in viral pneumonia, and iron acquisition in pneumococci.
Theory and Phenomena of Metamaterials offers an in-depth look at the theoretical background and basic properties of electromagnetic artificial materials, often called metamaterials. A volume in the Metamaterials Handbook, this book provides a comprehensive guide to working with metamaterials using topics presented in a concise review format along with numerous references. With contributions from leading researchers, this text covers all areas where artificial materials have been developed. Each chapter in the text features a concluding summary as well as various cross references to address a wide range of disciplines in a single volume.
