On Modern Beauty

  • Categories: Art

A thought-provoking examination of beauty using three works of art by Manet, Gauguin, and Cézanne. As the discipline of art history has moved away from connoisseurship, the notion of beauty has become increasingly problematic. Both culturally and personally subjective, the term is difficult to define and nearly universally avoided. In this insightful book, Richard R. Brettell, one of the leading authorities on Impressionism and French art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dares to confront the concept of modern beauty head-on. This is not a study of aesthetic philosophy, but rather a richly contextualized look at the ambitions of specific artists and artworks at a particular ...

Manet and Friends accompanies an exhibition of the same name organized by the Palmer Museum of Art in memory of the Manet scholar and Penn State distinguished professor of art history George Mauner, who passed away in 2004. The catalogue focuses on the printmaking milieu of Paris during the 1860s and early 1870s, when Édouard Manet produced the majority of his graphic works. Seventeen of Manet's etchings and lithographs are discussed, as are an equal number of prints by several of his colleagues and associates, including Félix Bracquemond, Alphonse Legros, and Marcellin Desboutin. Nancy Locke's feature essay examines Manet's prints in light of the French concept of les moeurs--customs, habits, or manners, but also ethics--about which mid-nineteenth-century writers and artists were deeply concerned. In discussing the confrontational manner in which Manet regularly posed his subjects, Locke speculates on how the viewer might have been expected to respond to such portrayals. The catalogue entries were written by Patrick McGrady.

A groundbreaking and richly illustrated account of the importance of Manet’s family to his art All families are complicated, but the family of Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was more complicated than most. The artist married a piano teacher who worked for his wealthy parents. Her son, born out of wedlock, may have been Édouard’s, his father’s, or another man’s. For all its complexities, Manet’s family fueled his creativity. They were his most frequent models, and supported him emotionally and financially. Manet: A Model Family is an innovative new exploration of the largely neglected story of the importance of Manet’s family to his art. Presenting new research on works in which Ma...

Pissarro, Neo-Impressionism, and the Spaces of the Avant-Garde

  • Categories: Art

Martha Ward tracks the development and reception of neo-impressionism, revealing how the artists and critics of the French art world of the 1880s and 1890s created painting's first modern vanguard movement. Paying particular attention to the participation of Camille Pissarro, the only older artist to join the otherwise youthful movement, Ward sets the neo-impressionists' individual achievements in the context of a generational struggle to redefine the purposes of painting. She describes the conditions of display, distribution, and interpretation that the neo-impressionists challenged, and explains how these artists sought to circulate their own work outside of the prevailing system. Painting...

The touchstones of Gothic monumental art in France - the abbey church of Saint-Denis and the cathedrals of Chartres, Reims, and Bourges - form the core of this collection dedicated to the memory of Anne Prache. The essays reflect the impact of Prache’s career, both as a scholar of wide-ranging interests and as a builder of bridges between the French and American academic communities. Thus the authors include scholars in France and the United States, both academics and museum professionals, while the thematic matrix of the book, divided into architecture, stained glass, and sculpture, reflects the multiple media explored by Prache during her long career. The essays employ a varied range of ...

Marketing Modernism in Fin-de-Siècle Europe

  • Categories: Art

In this fundamental rethinking of the rise of modernism from its beginnings in the Impressionist movement, Robert Jensen reveals that market discourses were pervasive in the ideological defense of modernism from its very inception and that the avant-garde actually thrived on the commercial appeal of anti-commercialism at the turn of the century. The commercial success of modernism, he argues, depended greatly on possession of historical legitimacy. The very development of modern art was inseparable from the commercialism many of its proponents sought to transcend. Here Jensen explores the economic, aesthetic, institutional, and ideological factors that led to its dominance in the internation...
