The Macroeconomics of Open Economies Under Labour Mobility
First published in 1999, this study recognises the importance of international labour mobility for modern economics. This is in large part due to its effects on the size, age structure and skills of the labour force, the human flow between countries and the expected rise in scale as a result of income differentials, demographic pressures and differential labour-force growth rates along with developments in transport and communications. These migrations are increasingly volatile and unpredictable, whilst being concentrated in regions like Australia, the USA, Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Europe. Given the extensive literature on the microeconomic view, George M. Agiomirgianakis aims to extend the debate on open economy macroeconomics through an exploration of international labour mobilities and their effects on open economies with flexible exchange rates.
Aspects of Globalisation
Reflecting on the breadth of its scope, Aspects of Globalisation is intended to serve a varied audience. Being at the forefront of research, it should appeal to academics, researchers and postgraduate students interested in new approaches and ideas for future research. To this end, the editors have encouraged the contributors to pursue varied themes and raise new issues, approach their subject matter in an analytically rigorous way, and to include fairly extended review sections within their papers, so as to make them useful to a wider readership. Furthermore, diverse methodologies are followed, including the widespread use of state-of-the-art econometrics, reflecting the recent trend in economic analysis. Equally importantly, many of the papers offer clear-cut policy conclusions and should therefore be of direct relevance to policy-minded analysts and policy-makers. We thus hope that the papers included here will provoke further research and ideas as well as contribute to ongoing policy debates. Its diversity, rigour and scope should be positive attributes of the volume and should make it a useful source of information for researchers and policy-makers alike.
Job Creation and Job Destruction in Greek Manufacturing
This paper examines job construction and destruction patterns in Greek manufacturing for the period 1995-99, just before Greece's entry to the European Monetary Union (EMU). The analysis uses descriptive statistics and regression models and is performed on a longitudinal sample of 6164 firms, classified by size of employment and by manufacturing sector. The results show the dynamic role small- and medium-sized firms play in net employment creation in Greek manufacturing. High technology and capital-intensive manufacturing sectors contribute mostly to net employment growth. Age of the firm is adversely connected to employment growth, while export activity and location of firms contribute significantly in net job creation. Significant determinants to employment growth are firm size, age, profitability, sales growth, reliance on debt and investment in new fixed assets. Economic policy measures are suggested to promote the establishment and survival of new small manufacturing firms, and the growth of the surviving ones.
