The Geophysics of the Pacific Ocean Basin and Its Margin

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 19. The papers included in this volume were originally presented at the International Woollard Symposium held at the Kahala Hilton Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 8 through December 10, 1974. The symposium honored Professor George P. Woollard on the occasion of his 66th birthday. It was cosponsored by the University of Hawaii, where Professor Woollard is Director of the University of Hawaii's Institute of Geophysics, by the U.S. Geodynamics Committee, by the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics of the International Council of Scientific Unions, and by the following Sponsoring and Organizing C...

This report represents a study to determine the degree to which gravity values are related to surface elevation, geology and crustal structure. This study was prompted by the need for gravitational information on a world-wide basis for geodetic studies and the fact that gravitational information is lacking or not available for about threefourths of the earth's surface. If a set of reliable general relations could be established between surface elevation, crustal and geologic parameters and gravity values, it would be possible to overcome in large measure this serious handicap. The study presented is based upon relations observed in North America, Australia, Europe, India, South Africa, and the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean Basins. (Author).

The effect of adopting the Geodetic Reference System 1967 (GRS 67) theoretical gravity formula and the International Gravity Standardization Net 1971 (IGSN 71) on gravity anomaly values is assessed. The gravity standard represented in the IGSN 71 values is shown to not conform to that of modern absolute gravity values as well as one might expect although, overall, the apparent discrepancy does not appear to be greater than about 0.03 mgal/1000 mgal change. That the source of error probably lies in the IGSN 71 adjustment is brought out by the close agreement (0.03 mgal) for pendulum and absolute gravity intervals between Washington and Teddington and Paris and Teddington which differ by appro...
