Freight Transport Modelling is a unique new reference book that provides insight into the state-of-the-art of freight modelling. Focusing on models used to support public transport policy analysis, Freight Transport Modelling systematically introduces the latest freight transport modelling approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models. As freight transport has grown exponentially in recent decades, policymakers now need to include freight flows in quantitative evaluations of transport systems. Whereas early freight modelling practice was inspired by passenger transport models, by now it has developed its separate stream of methods and technique...

Soil Mechanics and Transport in Porous Media

"This book contains an overview of the most relevant scientific contributions of Gerard de Josselin de Jong to the development of both Soil Mechanics and Transport in Porous Media. The volume comprises a selection of papers by de Josselin de Jong as they were published in the international scientific literature. In addition, some unpublished, but highly relevant work has been included. The selected papers were published in the period 1950-1990. They clearly demonstrate the development of ideas and the profound contributions of de Josselin de Jong." "This volume is intended for scientists, and engineers, working in geohydrology, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, environmental engineering, and transport in porous media. In addition, the volume will be of interest to students studying one of the aforementioned fields."--Jacket.

This book discusses the role of the prison in Europe across a divide of over 200 years. Inspired by the travels of the prison reformer John Howard (1726-1790), who visited prisons across Europe in the eighteenth century, it fundamentally reflects on centuries of the practice of locking people up as punishment. Howard travelled across Europe to visit prisons, with a simple method: he travelled and knocked on prison doors on his journey and entered the premises. He then observed the situation in the prison, took notes and left to visit other locations. Howard's influential book The State of the Prisons resulted from his experiences, provoking debate among prison reformers and academics worldwi...

Study on Ideas on a New National Freight Model System for Sweden

In a contract for the SAMGODS group, containing the Swedish national road, rail and aviation administrations and led by SIKA, RAND Europe, together with Transek has carried out an idea study on a new national freight transport model system for Sweden. The objective of the study was: To provide state-of-the-art ideas that are consistent and innovative on a conceptual framework for policy orientated analyses and modelling of freight transport in a Swedish context. The new Swedish freight transport model system, that should succeed the present SAMGODS model, should cover all modes (road, rail, air, maritime) and geographic levels (international, national, regional). Furthermore, it should be able to provide medium and long run forecasts (certainly including 10-25 years ahead), and be capable of being used to assess transport policy measures and for the evaluation of infrastructure projects. The SAMGODS group has decided to commission four idea studies, each of which can cover either the full model system or parts of it. This report contains the outcomes of an idea study covering the full model system.
