A revealing account of Hitler’s thoughts and actions throughout World War II from one of his closest aides. Major Gerhard Engel was Hitler's army adjutant from 1938 to 1943. During his years with Hitler, Engel kept a diary. After the war, he added material to shed further light on certain events, military and political decisions, and Hitler's attitude to particular problems. His diary covers the decision-making process behind crucial military actions, including the annexation of Austria, the invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the war against Russia. He also addresses intrigue within Hitler's inner circle and his casual conversations with other key Nazi figures. At the Heart of the Reich sheds...

Second Order Differential Equations

Second Order Differential Equations

Second Order Differential Equations presents a classical piece of theory concerning hypergeometric special functions as solutions of second-order linear differential equations. The theory is presented in an entirely self-contained way, starting with an introduction of the solution of the second-order differential equations and then focusingon the systematic treatment and classification of these solutions. Each chapter contains a set of problems which help reinforce the theory. Some of the preliminaries are covered in appendices at the end of the book, one of which provides an introduction to Poincaré-Perron theory, and the appendix also contains a new way of analyzing the asymptomatic behavior of solutions of differential equations. This textbook is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering interested in Ordinary and Partial Differntial Equations. A solutions manual is available online.

Frederick the Great

GERHARD RITTER'S biography of Frederick the Great onglnated in a series of lectures, which were published with scarcely any revisions in 1936. In this translation, based on the third edition, published in 1954, Paret has tried to convey the hard and precise style that characterizes the German text, while eliminating some of the numerous adjectives and parallel phrases that a lecturer might have found useful for emphasis but which seem unnecessary on the printed page. With the author's agreement also excluded is the brief introduction and epilogue of the original, since they are addressed specifically to the German reader and to German conditions. Gerhard Ritter died in 1967, shortly after the translation was completed.

A journalist from Texas, Shay walked for peace from Dallas to Moscow in 1984-85, "A Walk of the People," and about 600 miles in India in 1987-88. "Walking Through the Wall" is his account of these walks. When in 1984 the nuclear arms race intensified -- nuclear arms increasing on both sides and leaders seemingly intransigent -- Shay and others joined together in A Walk of the People to raise awareness of the nuclear danger and to break through the governments' walls. His journey's urgent purpose and the stories he tells of individual and official breakthroughs during the march call us today to join the struggle to avert nuclear war. -- Danish Peace Academy review.

OSTERMEIER
